Experts at work

The SK Bikes company has devoted itself to the supply of spare parts and service for MZ. We rode the MZ Scrambler 1100 from SK Bikes.

Wedemark, north of Hanover: half-timbered farms flank the way to the Luneburg Heath. The nearby A 7, the longest continuous motorway in Europe, brings drivers from 1000 MZ every now and then. The company SK Bikes is dedicated to supplying spare parts and service M.Z prescribed: for modern 125/660 four-stroke singles and the Saxon two-cylinder. The spectacular SFx study was recreated here in 2006 and the former MOTORRAD endurance test copy of the sporty MZ 1000 S (issue 21/2014) was brought to a full 1099 cubic meters.

Martial, daring look is not just a show

In addition, there are new software as well as changes to the airbox and the completely new exhaust for the benefit of more effective ventilation: manifold from SR Racing, mufflers from LeoVince and connecting pipe made by yourself. Motto: What doesn’t fit is made to fit. Equipped in this way, the in-line engine should be good for “measured 140 hp in the engine”, as Detlef Schill says. Well, at the on-site visit, there is no Dynojet test stand ready. But the statement could be correct. Even a series 1000 produced real 117 hp.

And the tuning twin can do more. When accelerating at full speed, he turns narrow streets through sparse birch and pine forests into the narrowest tubes of asphalt. There’s something going on. From namely. In high gear, the MZ Scrambler 1100 can be gently activated and accelerated from around 2500 tours. From the 5000 mark, there is really something tasty. Okay, a Ducati V2 turns up more freely. But the East German 1100 is always fiery enough. Their martial, daring look is not just a show. The owner of this conversion already has five 1000 MZs (S, SF, ST, SF-Gespann and SFx) – this one is supposed to crown the collection, which also includes other motorcycles and vintage cars. “He lives in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and wants to take it to his horses in the paddock.” Detlef and Markus, in turn, wanted to emphasize the “glorious off-road tradition of MZ.”

Completely TÜV approved and registered

You do this with the enduro-style engine protection of a Kawasaki KLE 500. Above all, however, with stylish Conti TKC 80 studded tires in the wide formats 120/70 17 and 180/55 17 on beautifully crafted Kineo spoked wheels. The rear wheel rotates in an upturned single-sided swing arm of a Ducati Multistrada, which now grabs from the right as a clamping fist. “It was a lot of fiddling until everything came together,” says Markus Kraege. “I don’t design on the computer in CAD, I have to try it out on a real object”. Everything is technically clean, completely TÜV-approved and registered.

You have to feel your way to the high seat height: “This is not a motorcycle for pygmies,” says Detlef Schill. The Grobstoller roll “angular” on asphalt in an inclined position. In return, they offer a lot of traction on harvested stubble fields. The fiery red playmobile is very easy to control on the wide handlebars, it feels light. Fork, brake calipers and shock absorber are standard, the rear frame is an in-house construction, “welded by a certified specialist company”. Other fenders, new taillights and classic round headlights go with it. Furthermore, new instruments, Kellermann indicators and an MZ tank with modified edges and beads. Here were experts at work, nice Nordic petrol heads.
