Driving report NCR-Ducati Millona

Ease and passion

The Italian company NCR has been refining Ducatis since 1969. With the Millona, the tuning company built its own motorcycle for the first time. The philosophy of the racing machine: lightweight construction and exclusivity.

Racing spirit determines the atmosphere on the Brno racetrack, just a few days ago the Supersport and Superbike World Championships took place on the Czech circuit. The World Cup crowd has already moved on, but you can still literally grasp the spirit of competition and speed. An ideal time to do a few laps on the exclusive NCR Ducati Millona.

Whereby the Millona (roughly equivalent to “magnificent thousand meter”) inspires even when it is standing. The chic Italian from Lazzaro near Bologna shines with top processing. Fine weld seams adorn the tubular steel mesh of the self-made frame, which houses a Ducati twin as a supporting element. The axis of the self-developed, elegant and neatly crafted aluminum swing arm runs through the frame and motor. This takes on the strut on its top. The special thing about it: The mount has an eccentric that allows the monoshock to be linked to the swing arm at different angles. As a result, it also influences the geometry of the machine. This opens up a lot of set-up options for experts ?? Less experienced people can, however, get bogged down.

The Millona also offers a number of adjustment options on its front that change its geometry. There are five different inserts for the triple clamps to choose from; each corrects the offset (fork offset) by two millimeters. The inlays determine the distance between the fork tubes and the steering head, which changes caster and wheelbase and consequently influences driving stability and handling.

So much for the theory. The much more exciting practice certifies the Italo racer a superb stability and formidable handiness. It’s just great how tired the thousands lie in the mostly downhill, eternally long radii of Brno. In addition, it cuts into corners exactly like a laser and masters alternating curves, such as the left-right combination from the Omega, with impressive ease. In doing so, she moves almost any tight arcs. This performance is ?? in addition to the ingenious balance and the successful set-up of the Ohlins spring elements ?? only possible thanks to the unrivaled low weight of around 120 kilograms when dry. The expansion of the starter and the use of the finest materials such as titanium, magnesium and carbon fiber contribute significantly to the feather weight. All fairing parts, the rear frame and the tank are made of carbon. The exhaust, footrests, clutch cover, the spacers for the chain tensioner, some engine components and most of the screws are made of titanium. The test motorcycle rolled on magnesium wheels; carbon fiber wheels are also available.

These are equipped with steel brake discs in wave design, into which the linings of the radially screwed Brembo monoblock brake callipers bite. An extremely powerful combination. Even severe delays downhill, such as those celebrated before the first narrow left after the start / finish, are mastered with flying colors. Braking far into corners, a compulsory exercise on the Czech race track, succeeds excellently due to the good controllability.
The Millona’s Ducati 1000 DS engine thunders in its original condition in the Multistrada, among other things, and develops 84 hp there. The V2 is of course tuned for use in racing bikes. The Signori are silent about this NCR persistently out; but at least a few details penetrated her thin lips. The self-developed ram air system ends in a huge air box between the cylinders. From there, the air passes through 50 millimeter (series: 45) throttle valves into the cylinder heads. The (still) standard camshafts command titanium valves, the connecting rods come from our own production. The most complex tuning measure is the expansion of the displacement: a four millimeter larger bore (98 millimeters) increases the displacement to 1078 cm3. The engine management was programmed using a special ignition-injection computer.

According to NCR, around 107 hp should be applied to the clutch; a quite believable value, because the engine is very lively and starts powerfully. In addition, it hangs perfectly on the gas; Controllability, performance and running culture are exemplary. So a great drive that drives vehemently out of the corners. On the long straights and the steep uphill passages of Brno, however, he misses a bit of lard. Powerful cars pull past the Italian? until the next snake.

NCR offers the racer in three versions. For more information, go to www.ncrfactory.it. MOTORRAD tested the company’s own racing machine “Millona factory”, which comes very close to the top model “Millona One Shot”. Price: 37,000 euros plus VAT. With less exquisite materials and without engine tuning, 23,500 euros are due. A high rarity and lots of racing spirit is common to all Millona models? not only in Brno.
