Catwiesel

The island’s enduro big cat bares its teeth. With more power and a firmer chassis, she wants to hit the competition.

Tiger fans can breathe a sigh of relief, past the time when they faced the ubiquitous armament in the travel enduro camp helplessly. Where performances of around 95 hp are now considered good form, the most powerful Enduro with 885 cm3 triple at its premiere lacked the last bit of steam compared to the triumphant protagonists. Therefore, the British are now sending the tiger on the prowl with a 955 cm3 three-cylinder, whose 98 PS, catalyst-cleaned in Germany, should make even the most powerful representative of this species feel the hot breath of the tiger in the neck. Abroad it blows even hotter without a Kat with 105 HP. But the ecologically correct version also shows its teeth: the engine, which is supplied by electronic manifold injection, is lively from as little as 1500 rpm, quickly pushing the tachometer needle towards the red area and driving the tigers forward without having any form weaknesses. Triumph’s promise that the 955i will deliver at least 90 percent of the maximum torque of 95 Newton meters between 4000 and 7000 rpm is obviously not an empty one. Tiger tamers can look forward to an even more spontaneous start than before. The 2001 big cat creeps up quietly: A new die-cast motor housing ?? Previously sand casting – the acoustic decoupling of the clutch cover and the relocation of the alternator behind the cylinder to the left crankshaft stub reduce the mechanical noise.
Speaking of noises: the exhaust gases gently whisper through a newly designed exhaust system, now without a front silencer and the catalytic converter housed there, but with three small individual catalytic converters in the manifold pipes, which are connected to an interference pipe. The oil cooler, which was previously positioned at risk of falling next to the manifold system, is now located below the water cooler.
In addition, the British modified the chassis. Although the 2000-year-old Tiger was not exactly decried as a wax-soft rocking horse, they trimmed the – non-adjustable – 43 fork with progressive springs and a modified damper characteristic.
When fully fueled, the Tiger 955i, which weighs almost five hundred pounds, shows a good compromise between long-distance comfort and agility on all kinds of slopes. The fork reacts somewhat unyieldingly to short bumps and hard edges, but coarser vibrations are successfully kept away from the crew. The same applies to the directly linked spring strut with adjustable spring base and rebound. When the stern is comfortably raised to level three using the hydraulically adjustable spring base without fumbling with a hook wrench, the big cat definitely lives up to its name and flits around with astonishing lightness – regardless of whether there are expansive arcs or super tight turns. Even corrections to the throttle grip are not taken seriously by the Tiger, the smooth, low-vibration drive operates without disruptive load changes. When the 24-liter tank is full to the full, only the naturally high center of gravity is noticeable; the Triumph wants to be brought back upright with a bit of emphasis from its inclined position.
S.There is enough lean angle, and when the fearful nipples of the footrests scrape across the floor, the Metzeler Tourance are not yet at their limit. The original equipment rubbers please with good grip and smooth running that is suitable for the highway. In addition, thanks to the »V« specification, they are equipped for speeds over 210 km / h, regions in which the strengthened tiger will go hunting. And probably with success, even longer high-speed stages are easy due to the stable straight-line stability, proper wind protection and longer secondary transmission (18:46 instead of 18:48). Despite the revised claw mechanism, the six-speed gearbox demands sustained actuation as before, the ?? unchanged ?? Braking system. Also unchanged: the tightly padded and practically height-adjustable bench. The non-adjustable levers are not quite as responsive. In particular, the clutch lever protruding far is not for short fingers. An alarm system with immobilizer can be ordered against thieves (749 marks), while tourists can access the case system (1679 marks) and top box (989 marks). Also in the Triumph offer: heated grips, taller panels and a tank bag. So can the Tiger 955i put the travel enduro elite in the bag in the future? The MOTORCYCLE comparison test gives an answer at the latest? soon at this point.
