Right from the start in the underground car park, the 500 DS from Voge (pronounced: Woutsch) makes it clear that it is serious about entertainment. It sounds powerful, the 471 cm3 engine, barks loudly from the short exhaust pipe.

However, with a permissible total weight of just 348 kg, the maximum payload remains a scant 126 kg for the driver, front passenger and luggage. This is a negative record and so tight that in our part of the world it will probably remain with the solo driver plus luggage for the time being.

The new, now colored TFT display offers a lot of information: tachometer (not easy to read), outside temperature, fuel level, gear indicator, trip or odometer, speedometer and average consumption. The latter value is even honest.

As soon as you start in the underground car park, the 500 DS makes Voge (spoken: Woutsch) realized she’s serious about the conversation. It sounds powerful, the 471 cm3 engine, barks loudly from the short exhaust pipe. The acoustic utterances culminate in a stationary noise of 98 decibels at half the nominal speed, i.e. at 4250 revolutions. That makes you sit up and take notice. She’s not allowed to go to Tyrol.

Motor known and potent

The engine is an old acquaintance, not only from the Voge 500 R, but also from the successful 500 series wins from Honda. However, Honda officially has nothing to do with this engine, it probably only served as an involuntary template. With the same bore / stroke ratio, the unit presses a whopping 47 hp at 8400 rpm on the dynamometer and offers a torque of 44 Nm at 6900 rpm.

Very handy and agile

This is precisely why the driver tends to shift into the next higher gear shortly before 7,000 revolutions, i.e. at the summit of the small torque hill, even at a brisk pace, and forego the last four horsepower, because after that there is not much going on in terms of propulsion. On the country road, the agile range between 4,000 and 7,000 revolutions is a pleasure, as the Voge 500 DS pushes forward cheerfully. On the Pirelli Angel ST, it steers cleanly and precisely moves its course, is very handy and manoeuvrable despite the measured weight of 222 kilos, even an impressive 238 kg including the case set.

Hardly any payload

It willingly takes the smallest of roads under the wheels and convinces with a tight, unchangeable basic setting of the chassis. However, with a gross vehicle weight of just 348 kg, the maximum payload remains a scant 126 kg for the driver, front passenger and luggage. This is a negative record and so tight that in our part of the world it will probably remain with the solo driver plus luggage for the time being. The copy template Honda CB 500 X shoulders at least 183 kilos. The sitting position on the Voge DS ensures ergonomically correct relaxation, a day tour of 300 kilometers can even be carried out by the very best. With a consumption of 3.7 liters on a leisurely country road trip, thanks to the 16.5-liter tank you can calculate 446 km. At kilometer 358 the display showed two out of five bars, but five kilometers later there was a sudden and unexpected alarm and the reserve flashed. That makes you nervous and urges you to stop fueling early.

Equipment like the big ones

The new, now colored TFT display offers a lot of information: tachometer (not easy to read), outside temperature, fuel level, gear indicator, trip or odometer, speedometer and average consumption. The latter value is even honest. On a brisk highway trip, a real 5.1 liters at applied 140 km / h were displayed, exactly as measured. At this speed, the small disc, which can only be adjusted manually and only from the front in two basic positions, protects the upper body from wind pressure, helmet and shoulders but not from turbulence. The brakes work well, but it takes three fingers to decelerate properly, and the clutch also needs a bit of power and is not easy on the hand. Both levers are adjustable, a bonus in the price range of 6,000 euros. The gearbox is easy to shift when it is warm; when it is cold, the gears hang a bit from time to time. In the sum of its properties, this motorcycle offers a good (re) entry into country road hiking, as long as it stays on the tour on narrow streets and under 100 km / h. It gets rather loud and annoying about it. If you stay below 7,000 revolutions, you bypass nasty vibrations and surf the little torque hill.

Conclusion

Due to the very low possible payload, the DS is currently more of a solo tourer. The importer is on the subject and is currently trying to increase the gross vehicle weight rating for the entire model range. The consumption of almost 3.7 liters pleases the environment, the low price the wallet, the 98 decibel standing noise creates big question marks behind the 500 engine.
