Shorter suspension travel, larger motor, plenty of electronics: the new Multistrada 1260 Enduro from Ducati wants to shine with more sociability without betraying its off-road virtues.

More torque downstairs, that’s true. However, the V2 is reluctant to master very low speeds, only from 3,000 rpm does it run smoothly and above that the engine can no longer stop.

Adventure bike in the driving report

Ducati has equipped the 1260 Multistrada Enduro with a new engine and new features for the 2019 model year. The 1,262 cm³ Testastretta-V2 comes with a variable valve control and 158 hp. We could already drive it.

Tried with numerous innovations D.ucati to expand the concept of versatility of the multistrada. For this purpose, the cubic capacity of the V2 was first expanded. The new Ducati Teststretta DVT engine comes in with 1,262 cm³ and is supposed to provide more power and torque in the low and medium speed range. The peak performance is stated to be 158.3 hp, which is present at 9,300 tours. The maximum torque of 128 Nm should be available at 7,500 rpm. Around 85% of this should be available at less than 3,500 rpm. The oil change intervals should be 15,000 km, the desmodromic system requires a check every 30,000 km.

Chassis and electronics update

But there were also improvements in the areas of chassis and electronics. In the chassis, a longer swing arm, a longer wheelbase and the revised steering geometry should ensure more precise steering behavior and, at the same time, unswerving stability when riding in pillion mode with a full load and mounted side cases. In addition, the suspension travel on both wheels was cut by 15 mm and the weight of the wheels was reduced by 2 kg. A new handlebar (30 mm lower) and a newly shaped, now two-tone bench (seat height now 860 mm, alternatives with 840 and 880 mm are available for an extra charge), together with the lower overall center of gravity, should result in better ergonomics and better handling

Ducati

The new Ducati 1260 Multistrada Enduro will be available in two different colors.

The electronics package of the new Ducati Multistrada 1260 includes, among other things, cornering ABS, cornering lights and electronically controlled chassis (both from Multistrada S), eight-level wheelie control, eight-level traction control, blipper, various driving modes and a hill start aid. The 5-inch TFT display in the cockpit has also been refreshed and expanded in terms of its functionality.

In terms of design, the changes are mainly limited to a new decor, but some plastic parts have also been adapted to a small extent.

Four other versions available

The new Ducati 1260 Multistrada Enduro is the fifth model in the range. The versions Multistrada 1260, Multistrada 1260 S, Multistrada 1260 S DAir, Multistrada 1260 Pikes Peak are already available. Prices start at 16,990 euros for the basic version. The S variant is in the price list at a basic price of 19,690 euros. The Multistrada 1260 S DAir costs from 20,490 euros and the Pikes Peak from 24,390 euros. The Multistrada 1260 Enduro costs from 20,690 euros. They will be available in the colors sand and red.

There is also a wide range of special accessories such as Aluminum case and top case, as well as the Touring, Sport, Urban and Enduro packages. The Multistrada 1260 Enduro will reach dealers from December 2018.

Ducati

The revised ride-by-wire is already noticeable when starting off. Extremely fine, with the best of manners, the test motorcycle hangs on the gas.

The first bends meander through the hilly landscape, gear position three is emblazoned on the large, easy-to-read, colored display. The next straight is announced and on the shower. Oops, that doesn’t really fit now. The engine turns too low and rattles hard. Quickly shift down a gear with the blipper and the L-Twin is back in the comfort zone. More torque down below, that’s true. However, the V2 is reluctant to master very low speeds, only from 3,000 rpm does it run smoothly and above that the engine can no longer stop. He continues to increase performance evenly, delivers plenty of power, emphatically but never impetuously.

The semi-active chassis allows the Multi 1260 Enduro to glide good-naturedly over faults without diluting the feedback. At most, when anchoring very deeply into curves with stable Brembo radial pliers, the fork shows a slight life of its own, while the shock absorber follows the track without grumbling. But that could definitely be turned off. The chassis setup includes around 400 configuration options.

Ducati

The Multi can also handle easy terrain.

The newly arranged seating position is comfortable. What remains, however, as before: Due to the pronounced hollow in the seat, the pilot is still squatting strongly and somewhat rigidly in the motorcycle, and there is no room to move.

Change to off-road terrain. Broad, coarse gravel forest paths do not impress the Multi. In off-road mode and the corresponding suspension tuning, the shortened spring travel swallows a lot out, keeping the Ducati calm. Of course, there are still limits for machines and, above all, for humans. At a slow pace, the more than five quintals with a full tank are clearly noticeable.
