Monster race bike

You do that 1098 from Ducati Berlin??. That could be exciting for someone like me who “Ducati” can spell it perfectly, but has never driven one meter before. Establishing contact: Something animal black, which was most reminiscent of a Monster S4R, lolled on a small carpet, armored with heating blankets. Except for the tank, there didn’t seem to be much left of the original Monster: Ohlins chassis, carbon rear and thick Brembos indicated that evil was lurking here. Then the guys around Stephan Prieto attacked me and couldn’t stop explaining: The engine of this black thing is based on a 999R housing, the displacement has grown to 1099 cm³ thanks to various 1098 parts and was only able to use special because of the swing arm mount manufactured adapters can be fitted into the monster frame. The guys’ shining eyes revealed how much fun and heart they had put into this project.

“I’ll take a lap, then we’ll talk more, okay?” The small start button sits incredibly far away from the throttle grip. He sets in motion an unmistakable procedure. For a brief moment it is believed that the large-volume two-cylinder is too much for the battery before the first big bang-sized ignition stifles all doubts. At the latest when the typical rattle of the dry clutch enters the symphony of the engine, all the other pit residents are just extras. I roll past the gazes out into the open and I can experience my first Italian moments out of the pit lane. Wide handlebars, classic analog instruments, upright seating position. I feel a little sorry for the kippers around me, some of which are absurdly curved over the tank, as they would never find out what it means to withstand the elements of parabolic steroids with superbike handlebars. This Italian aggregate pushes brutally. Matchless.

The naked super monster

The men at Ducati Berlin know how to build potent naked bikes.

The vibrations, the noises and the thrust penetrate deeply into you. No stupid expression of performance in the world could convey these 125 Nm and 155 PS even remotely as the Ducati does in real life. Even the speedometer gives everything and sometimes pushes the needle straight down. Your senses have difficulty digesting all the unfamiliar and at the same time not forgetting the basics such as shifting and braking. The first rounds have a real test character. The footpegs sit too low and drag unrestrainedly, the carbon tail does not want to stay in its lock and the gear ratio is far too short. In addition, the little one tends to easily commute at high speeds. Time to stop by the box. The adjustments are made quickly. I enter the route again appropriately with a power wheelie and enjoy this driving machine. On the brakes, the 180-kilo lightweight, equipped with Dymag carbon wheels, has no natural enemies; the symbiosis of Ohlins and Brembo is suspect.

Heavy 1000s prefer to bremborize the monsters. The vibrations are addicting, the curves are fed up and the engine power is finely controllable. Only commuting at high speeds is a bit annoying. Consistent pressure on the front wheel minimizes the incline. Lowering the front finally creates calm in the front building. As far as I am concerned, the test could take a little longer; It’s not entirely without sadness that I hand the super monsters back to the Berliners. In the evening, my thoughts are still lingering on her, a person from the photography guild comes by: Yes, well, there is a little problem, nobody could have suspected that the 1098 was a monster, and, well, it existed no photos yet. Can I do a few more laps tomorrow? Well, I don’t want to be like that. Of course, I didn’t stop until the last memory card was really full of images, I’m a professional in that respect. It was both an honor and a pleasure for me.
