E-bike drive for retrofitting: How to make your bike an electric bike-retrofitting

Bionx The conversion of a conventional bicycle into an e-bike now allows a retrofit kit presented by the Canadian drive specialist BIONX on the Eurobike

Who wants an electric bicycle, does not necessarily have to buy one. You can also reconstruct your normal wheel to the e-bike. The retrofit rates are not cheap, but above all, not every wheel is suitable for a conversion.

The conversion of a conventional bicycle into an e-bike allows a retrofit kit, the Canadian drive specialist BIONX on Eurobike (27. to 28. August) presented in Friedrichshafen and launching the market at the end of October. After factory information, the subsequently mounted drive should provide all the advantages of a conventional pedelecs. These include, among other things, regenerative brakes and the so-called stepper sensor developed by BIONX.

Own wheel and battery

The retrofit solution D-Series Super Sports Kit consists of a stored rear wheel with integrated electric motor, a subrobe ku and an operating console on the handlebar and all the small parts necessary for the cultivation. With a maximum torque of 50 nm, the drive has been developed especially for drivers, which prefer a sporty driving style on road and in the field. The spokes pass on the side of the electric motor housing and are thus significantly longer than other hub motors, which in turn results in a more dynamic impeller and to develop additional comfort and traction.

When developing the drive, the technicians focused mainly on the new 555 Wh strong energy storage. The result is a range of 135 kilometers that should be achieved even in sporty driving. Compared to the previously strongest battery of the brand, this is an increase of just under 30 percent. In addition to the new Super Sport series, Canadians also offer recovery sets for less dynamic cyclists in weaker power levels. The drive can be combined with nine and tenfold circuits of Shimano and SRAM and is also available in impeller sizes 29 and 28 and 27.5 and 26 inches for disk and rim brakes.

Complex conversion – and outrageous prices

However, the transformation of a conventional bicycle into a pedelec should be left to a specialist company. For hobby basters the conversion is not suitable. Before ordering the conversion kit, you should also be able to examine the bike exactly to determine weak points and exclude from the outset that the drive is overwhelmed for frame and braking. After all, the drive weighs 7.8 kilograms alone, including all ancillary units.

In general, the assembly is only worthwhile for high-quality bicycles, because the transformation is not inexpensive. BIONX demands for the sporty retrofit kit 2.000 Euro (555 WH). Leaky aggregates with 317 Wh are still beating 1.600 Euro plus assembly son to beech.
