Young researchers from the ETH in Zurich are currently developing a new electric motorcycle. At the moment, the so-called Ethec is a prototype that has some technical finesse.

The range of the Ethec should be more than 400 kilometers. At least the young student team from Zurich gives this distance as a target. This is to be made possible by a newly developed technology in which energy is to be generated with the help of braking power through recuperation. The project also focuses on design and other technical innovations.

Wheel hub motor in the front wheel

The developers of the prototype state on the associated project page that normally when a motorcycle brakes, 75 percent of the energy is lost on the front wheel. The student team wants to secure this energy with the help of a wheel hub motor. The energy obtained is converted into electricity, which should increase the range accordingly. The lithium-ion battery used is kept at the ideal temperature by a thermoelectric cooling system. The battery should be able to be recharged within just an hour.

According to their own statements, the design of the Ethec is based on a body. The headlight is also particularly noticeable. The seat is rather narrow. Otherwise there is a keyless system with which the motorcycle can be started without a key and a 7-inch touchscreen on which the most important information is displayed. An integrated navigation system is also on board. Last but not least, the ETH students also provided information on the power of the electric motor: the drive should produce the equivalent of 67 hp. The maximum speed should be sealed off at 135 km / h. 

It is doubtful whether the project will ever become more than a prototype. However, the newly developed technology certainly has potential and could be one of many solutions for increasing the range of electric motorcycles.
