Eleven cameras, three price ranges

To test eleven current action cams in three price categories, we converted a series motorcycle into a video mobile for a special series measurement. With interesting results.

Did Sony pinch? Officially, the Japanese camera manufacturer only let us know: “Sorry, we unfortunately don’t have any devices in-house that we can provide for your test.” It’s strange that a global company doesn’t have a single action cam for a few weeks in advance could find this MOTORCYCLE group test, right? Especially since the new Sony X1000 with impressive key data would have been able to assert itself wonderfully in the premium class against the top dog GoPro – passionate motorcycle videographers (and potential buyers) would certainly have been interested in the result.

But as it was, GoPro had only one opponent with the also new Hero 5 Black among the premium devices: Garmin. It could easily compete with the all-time winner GoPro, user-friendliness and equipment with motorcycle-compatible brackets were better, but the picture quality was just underdone. Which should ultimately be decisive for a camera, so the Hero 5 rightly deserves the test victory.

Both premium devices deliver stunningly good images, and the other cameras were also mostly convincing. The video shows clear examples from our test. In contrast to a few years ago, when washed-out, pixelated and jerky videos with at best a documentary character set the standard, today the following applies: Hollywood level. Especially since so-called 4K technology found its way into private households. What is meant is a four times higher resolution than Full HD, which until recently was the highest standard. 4K, i.e. at least 3,820 by 2,160 pixels, generally means sharper and more brilliant images. And logically, we motorcyclists want to see top quality and, ideally, produce it ourselves that is as close as possible to the reality of the actual driving experience. Most of the action cams in our current comparison deliver 4K quality, so they are up to date.

Premium, middle class and entry-level action cams

We have divided our Actioncam test into three classes: Premium (without price restrictions), middle class (up to 350 euros) and beginners (up to 150 euros). Because despite the enthusiasm for first-class videos – not everyone can and wants to afford the most expensive devices. For documentation of vacation trips, for recording occasional racing training sessions and for sharing nice souvenir photos from a day trip with friends, middle-class action cams are definitely sufficient. You can live with small compromises in image and sound quality. and TomTom With the well-made Bandit Bike Pack, it even proves that professional equipment doesn’t have to cost a lot. Compared to the test winners and top cameras of the respective previous generations, current middle graders often offer better performance anyway, which is hardly surprising in view of the rapid technological development in this area. Another thing: The specific motorcycle mounts rarely differ – premium class or medium class. So there is a lot to be said for choosing a mid-range action cam because it offers a healthy price-performance ratio.

But why choose one of the entry-level cameras? Even though, with the exception of the exemplary Rollei, according to our test results and also for laypeople, the picture, sound and equipment are clearly visible? Answer: to start with onboard filmmaking. Because often beginners are overwhelmed with the diverse possibilities and settings of a professional camera, and sometimes you can see quite quickly that you would rather just drive than film regularly. It’s good if there is no overly expensive device gathering dust in the drawer. Finally, a professional tip: work with multiple cameras! For captivating videos and photos you need good light, exciting motifs and as many unusual perspectives as possible. Creativity is required – 4K and high-tech cameras still cannot replace a trained eye on the part of a cameraman or woman.

Usability: extremely user-friendly, simple menu navigation through Voice Control (control through voice commands) and touchscreen; Buttons with good feedback

Usability: Menu navigation via button a bit cumbersome, easy via touchscreen, but hardly controllable with gloves

Processing / equipment: rubberized, very handy, high-quality housing (waterproof up to 30 m); excellently processed

Picture and sound quality: Very good image sharpness, reproduces the tones very realistically over the entire color scale, color brilliance not quite as high as with sister model Hero 5, but above average, videos nicely smooth and jerk-free; Photo quality on top level; Noise from the airstream separates itself well from the engine sound, which is reproduced a bit too bassy

Fortifications: Camera frame holder very precisely fitting; stable clamp holder made of metal with good insulation against vibrations, but only for a surcharge; Adhesive pads for helmet

Usability: One-button operation, switches well defined, easy to use even with gloves; Menu navigation via mini display is quite uncomfortable and confusing

Processing / equipment: Very good and solidly processed, equipment very spartan despite the waterproof camera housing. Handlebar bracket (see Hero 5, there in the picture) only for an extra charge

Conclusion: Lies like a dice in your hand – GoPro’s Hero Session should please everyone who is looking for an ultra-compact and uncomplicated action cam with high image quality. Also ideal as a supplementary camera.

Picture and sound quality: Image material with visible noise, grainy representation, distortion in driving recordings, colors slightly overdrawn, appear fake, fine motifs such as text on street signs come out pixelated, sometimes strong artifacts in moving images, noticeable red cast; fast shutter switching; Colors in photos are nice and strong, but noise is visible in artificial light; Engine sound unrealistic

Fortifications: Fits on GoPro brackets and sits firmly there, in-house handlebar bracket (only vertically adjustable, not in the picture) made of cheap-looking plastic holds very neatly

Usability: very easy operation even with gloves, gear buttons well defined; large color display very helpful when aligning

  • size: 93 x 56.5 x 35 mm

  • scope of delivery: Hand holder, lens cover, data and charging cable, wrist remote control, power supply unit

Picture and sound quality: Image looks slightly blurry and not particularly sharp, flat colors, contours quickly become frayed in glaring light, looks overexposed; The image tends to be too dark, but green tones are good and realistic; Engine noise is reproduced well when the vehicle is stationary, but driving recordings tend to have poor sound quality

Fortifications: The supplied handle can hardly be used on the motorcycle, at most useful for taking pictures by the pillion passenger; only thread mount, but fits various RAM mount motorcycle mounts (not available from Olympus, but for example via www.touratech.de)

Usability: intuitive menu navigation, good control and overview via the folding display; Understandable labeling of the controls

Processing / equipment: The camera housing should be waterproof to a depth of 30 meters, but the plastic housing looks cheap and the workmanship is rather mediocre

Conclusion: The waterproof Olympus Stylus TG Tracker is definitely a decent outdoor action cam. But for motorcyclists, not least because of the poor holder equipment and a relatively high price, it is only a second choice.

Picture and sound quality: Good image sharpness and clear contours, but somewhat flat colors, red tones appear faded; Recording angle not particularly wide, but covers a sufficiently good and pleasant-looking section; quite strong distortions; Photo image quality only average; There are strong background noises in the wind, engine noises seem real

Fortifications: Numerous different brackets, the camera can be attached very easily to different places on the motorcycle, the camera can be easily aligned using the ball head, even in unusual locations; Stability and material quality of the (plastic) holders are very good; Suction cup mount for cars

Usability: only small display, difficult to read outside depending on the incidence of light; Menu navigation is not particularly intuitive, but voice control is possible

Processing / equipment: Quality camera housing, extensive scope of delivery, waterproof extra housing included in the set

Fortifications: GoPro standard mounting made of plastic with a little play, did not sit optimally in the test; Tip for the motorcycle: Original accessory handlebar bracket “Hell Rider” made of metal for 33 euros (was tested outside of the rating)

Usability: easy to control with a remote control on the wrist; simple menu navigation

Fortifications: Only helmet holder included, but can also be attached to motorcycle fairing; Swivel mount simplifies camera alignment

Usability: simple operation, as there are hardly any functions; handy slide switch

Processing / equipment: impeccable workmanship, solid case; simple equipment, but an extra microphone for better and more direct audio recordings, e.g. for comments by the driver in action

This is how MOTORRAD tests

Own test setup. All image and sound recordings were brought in in the truest sense. For this we have a second slightly cranked LSL tubular handlebar on a Honda Africa Twin (www.lsl.eu) using RAM mount connections (available at www.touratech.de) and were able to attach several cameras to the upper rod of this “parallelogram” and operate them at the same time. Country roads through shady forest areas, tunnels and a free motorway offered optimal opportunities to request a wide range of image and sound quality from the cameras as well as the lens’ fading reactions when light and shadow rapidly changed. Another important test criterion: How can the devices be attached and aligned on the motorcycle with the brackets supplied? For the photo test images, we then set up a colorful still life in our in-house studio, where we also dealt extensively with menu navigation, usability, equipment and processing of the individual cameras.

4K is the power. In a direct comparison, cameras with a lower resolution are now falling behind, so Sena and Telefunken had bad cards. Although: The Session, an affordable mid-range camera from GoPro, proves that top videos can be made even without 4K resolution. Midland and Olympus disappointed despite 4K. The head-to-head race in the premium class was exciting: challenger Garmin was only marginally defeated by long-term winner GoPro – finally real competition! TomTom and Rollei also made very strong appearances, sovereignly asserting themselves in their respective classes. Good to buy.
