In the beginning there is the battery. energica builds the motorcycle around the self-developed battery. The capacity should be enough for 246 kilometers overland. The battery can be charged in less than an hour using the fast charger.

Driving report Energica Eva Ribelle RS
One hiss and you’re gone

MOTORRAD has already been able to drive the new EMCE engine from Energica. 10 kilos lighter, 25 hp more. Driving electrically has never been so impressive.

The next narrow right hugs the rocky slope, but Alessandro Brannetti lets the gas stand. In terms of recuperation, energy recovery, this is a sacrilege. But the exact opposite for driving fun. The guy not only knows every inch of this street, he also knows how to stay clean – he has already shown that in the 125 and 250 Grand Prix. He turns the shower off with pinpoint accuracy. I persistently try to stick with Energica’s test driver: These corner entrances – especially not visible – have it all.

Braking pushes

If you brake late and thus only use the selected braking torque of the engine to a minimum, you will feel the powerful thrust of the 260 kilo heavy Eva Ribelle RS. Even the right foot lazy to brake becomes active so as not to land at the apex on the opposite lane. Thank goodness you don’t have to worry about the right gear, you can concentrate fully on the braking and turning point. The RS is the flagship of the Energica road program, has a high-quality Marzocchi fork and top Brembo stoppers. This baked the entrance to the curve. The bike can be turned in surprisingly well on the light forged wheels and decelerated completely neutrally with degressive braking in an inclined position towards the apex. The weight of the rebel, as the translation reads, is becoming less and less important.

Gas pushes too

And then comes the moment when we turn up the gas, the e-handle, the energy supply regulator or whatever you should say, again in the flight of pearls. That feeling is worth all the hard work before every turn. As if fired with a catapult, it goes out of the bow. Completely linear, without delay, without any jerk, without interruption of traction, which even the best gearshift on the greatest superbike cannot prevent. Well over 200 Nm push you forward instantly – just crazy.

New motor

Energica has now heavily redesigned the drive train. MOTORRAD was allowed to test this exclusively. In addition to the control unit that regulates everything and which the team around technical director Giampiero Testoni has developed incredibly finely, the Ribelle, the touring Esse Esse and the super sports car Ego now have a new motor that is significantly lighter and much smaller than its predecessor. And it can do even more. According to Testoni, the moving and fixed parts, rotor and stator, have been significantly improved in the joint development with the Italian specialist Mavel, that the energy loss has been reduced again and the performance has been improved accordingly. This also includes a sophisticated liquid cooling system that includes the inverter, which means that more energy can be used uncritically. The EMCE-baptized drive now achieves a peak output of almost 170 hp at 8500 revolutions. At the same time, this made the bike a good ten kilos lighter (the new forged wheels save a few more pounds), which should ultimately increase the range by up to ten percent. That depends on the driving style. And what we are currently doing on the foothills of the Apennines not far from the Energica plant in Modena will hardly ensure a long range. But it’s just too much fun to worry about right now. Alessandro has it safely on his screen, and the display still shows a good 63 percent energy. I have to smile every time I look at the rather small dashboard, because our selected sport mode, which serves this crazy acceleration, is indicated by the route sketch of the Mugello racetrack.

Surprisingly fast

But every time I find out, puzzled, that we are mostly moving beyond 120 km / h and hardly develop a feeling for it. No wonder, because the usual signs of life of a combustion engine are missing, which constantly remind you of what mechanical work is necessary to reach 100 km / h and more. Here it just hisses, then it howls – and off you go!

Energica does it itself

When we return, Testoni will want to know everything and I have to pay him a big compliment. The driving dynamics are not only right in the drive train, the chassis is also excellent. How do you do that with such a heavy battery? “We start construction with, not around, the battery”, explains the smart engineer. Therefore builds Energica the battery completely itself, it fits perfectly into the chassis and thus achieves this great driving dynamics. If only it was easier. “Compared to the internal combustion engine, we’re still in the 1940s, when its development was rapid – like ours. There is still a lot to come.”

If so, then only a powerful electric motorcycle.

I can imagine an electric scooter for commuting and city traffic.

A small, agile electric moped is definitely fun.

None at all.

Conclusion

Energica’s new powertrain is a noticeable step forward; currently unique when it comes to e-motorcycles. The pure performance puts every combustion engine in the shade. The resentments about weight and range remain, but the development continues rapidly. And Energica is at the forefront.
