It’s worth doing the math: If you count the “Black versions” of the Bonneville T100 and T120 families as independent models, the entire Triumph twin series has no fewer than twelve versions. This does not even include the new 1200 scrambler, of which we can now show you a few more Erlkonig photos of two model variants. And yet one can assume that many have been waiting for these scramblers. First and foremost, all those who liked the classic look of the 900 Street Scrambler, but missed one thing above all, namely more liveliness, more cheerful pressure in all locations. The newcomer should – yes, must – bring it with her if she doesn’t want to swim against the robust and attractive competition from Ducati and BMW. It’s not enough just to cautiously buffer like your little sister, it has to bang.

Changes to the engine are unlikely

But don’t worry: anyone who knows the 1200 will have no doubt about it. A nominal 80 hp work in the high-torque version of the Bonnie, that would be enough. Where it is not top performance, but the full torque blow that is the pound with which the 1200 can proliferate. This manifests itself at 105 Newton meters at an impressive 3,100 rpm. With it, the British twin easily cooks the V2 of the 1100 Ducati Scrambler (88 Newton meters at 4,750 rpm). Just like the boxer competition from BMW, which, with its 116 Newton meters at 6,000 rpm, needs almost double the speed before it really gets down to business.

Seen in this way, extensive, torque-enhancing measures are not to be expected, the fat twin can stay as it is. What, on the other hand, seems to be urgently advised, is mobilization on the undercarriage to avoid the quiet glider Street scrambler to make a real entertainer. Triumph seems to want to bring the new Scrambler in two versions: the basic and the R version. And indeed, the so-called R variant could fulfill some fan requests: a light and expensive aluminum swingarm, a long Ohlins suspension strut, a massive upside-down fork, a large double-disc brake system with the radial Brembo brake calipers from Thruxton – So the big Triumph Scrambler in the R version should not only have a lot of ground clearance, but also plenty of chassis reserves. If it still preserves the visual lightness of the prototype (even such a front fender can be a nuisance), one question remains for potential Scrambler customers: How do the British feel about the price? And will they actually be available in two different versions? The answer will probably be found at the big autumn trade fairs in Cologne and Milan.
