Do accessory exhaust systems make the BMW R 1100 S a better bike or just unnecessary inconveniences? Eight exhaust systems for the sports boxer and two retrofit collectors had to show their colors on the test bench.

More beautiful, lighter, more sonorous and above all more powerful than the series pots ?? the expectations of accessory exhaust systems are still high. Whether this in the case of BMW R 1100 S. are met, MOTORRAD tested on the basis of eight retrofit parts ?? six of them with EC type approval ?? in extensive test bench tests, which requires extensive screwing work due to the placement of the systems in the rear.
The price ranges from 499 euros for the pair of dampers from laser to the multi-part system with front silencer and catalytic converter from AC Schnitzer for 1368 euros. For the sometimes considerable costs of the test participants, buyers consistently receive high-quality goods that are clearly superior to the original parts in terms of workmanship and fully meet expectations. When it comes to weight, none of the test subjects can claim any decisive advantages for themselves. The maximum weight savings of around 900 grams (laser) are not great. Amazingly, the differences in the obligatory sound check are also only minor. Even the racing system from AC Schnitzer and the reworked series dampers from Gissel & Subjectively, tailors do not fall outside the legal framework of the other test candidates, who, with the exception of Staintune (report in preparation), all have an EC operating license. The reason for the comparatively restrained expressions of life of the boxer with the various pots is to be found in the large-volume front silencer, which takes over most of the noise reduction measures (see box on page 120).
In addition, it seems to have a not inconsiderable influence on performance development. In the test bench measurements of the Laser and Shark, which each retain the front silencer, the curves are slightly below those of the standard exhaust, but they are similarly homogeneous. In contrast, the BMW acknowledges the omission of the front silencer with power and torque losses, which are particularly evident
noticeable in the Staintune system and the Zach collectors. Apart from the marginally stronger AC Schnitzer, none of the systems tested was able to exceed the values of the standard exhaust. The tests with the BMW R 1100 S once again confirm the experience from previous tests that with legal accessory exhaust systems, performance increases can only be achieved in exceptional cases. If you are planning to buy an accessory for your R 1100 S, you shouldn’t set your expectations too high in this regard.

Accessories collector

Many pilots of the sports boxer are bothered by the voluminous and weighty front silencer of the standard exhaust system. In the meantime, however, there are some alternatives for the four-valve boxer from the accessories, which in the case of the R 1100 S can be combined not only with the original mufflers, but also with retrofit silencers. From the offer, MOTORRAD selected two collectors from Zach for the test bench comparison (phone 09941/3154; Internet www.zachauspuff.de), which are available both with a catalytic converter (536 euros) and without (329 euros). The variant without a catalytic converter first had to play a role in silencers. As much as the appearance benefits from the perfectly fitting and excellently processed collector, in terms of performance and, above all, torque, the BMW equipped with it disappointed with significantly poorer values over the entire speed range. The same applies to the collector with a welded-in Kat cartridge, which also caused the engine to lose another one horsepower. In return, the exhaust system modified in this way makes a big noise: the sports boxer already sounds along with the Zach collectors, for which there is no parts certificate the original pots are much louder and more aggressive. There is a good reason for the large volume of the standard front silencer, because it not only enables a catalytic converter with a large surface, but also makes a decisive contribution to legally compliant noise reduction with the best possible performance.

Original BMW

Provider: BMW, phone 089/9500850; Internet www.bmwmotorraeder.de Price: 539.75 euros (rear silencer); 375.84 Euro (front silencer with catalytic converter) Material: stainless steel with welded, black painted shielding plates and chrome-plated end caps Weight: 6.1 kg (rear silencer); 4.94 kg (front silencer) Length of silencer: 33 cm Diameter: 12.6 x 9.6 cm (oval) Comments: precisely fitting, functionally processed standard silencer with coarse weld seams in the non-visible area; Conclusion: heavy series exhaust with a voluminous front silencer and catalytic converter, which helps the sports boxer to achieve the most homogeneous power and torque curve in the test field

AC Schnitzer – Grand Prix

Provider: AC Schnitzer Motorradtechnik, phone 0241/5688300; Internet www.ac-schnitzer.de Price: 539 euros (rear silencer); 829 Euro front silencer with catalytic converter and connecting pipes) Material: Stainless steel with a coating of highly polished aluminum Weight: 6.66 kg (rear silencer); 6.12 kg (front silencer with connecting pipes) Silencer length: 33 cmDiameter: 12.4 x 9.4 cm (oval) Comments: Relatively time-consuming assembly, since the front silencer, two connecting pipes and the rear silencer have to be aligned; generally good fit, but strong tension between left connecting pipe and damper; EC type approval; identical to Remus Conclusion: very heavy, multi-part retrofit system with excellent workmanship, which helps the R 1100 S to achieve a minimally higher peak performance

Racing

Representing the large number of open racing pots, a multi-part AC Schnitzer system without road approval also went through the measurement procedure. As with the identical exhaust system with EC type approval, the open racing dampers are also screwed to the in-house front silencer with catalytic converter. In a direct comparison, however, the roaring bags draw the shorter: Both peak power and torque are just below the good values that the sports boxer can achieve with the legal silencers from AC Schnitzer. So even with the BMW R 1100 S, more noise does not mean more power. Even on the racetrack you are better served with the legal silencers. Price: 499 euros (rear silencer); 829 euros (front silencer with catalytic converter and connecting pipes) Weight: 5.58 kg (rear silencer); 6.12 kg (front silencer with connecting pipes)

Gissel & cutter

Conversion of the original damper

Provider: Gissel & Schneider Motorradtechnik, phone 0271/88890; Internet www.gissel-schneider.de Price: 280 euros (costs for the conversion of delivered dampers) plus shipping costsMaterial: stainless steel with welded heat protection made of painted sheet steelWeight: 5.52 kg (rear muffler); 4.94 kg (front silencer with connecting pipe) Silencer length: 33 cmDiameter: 12.6 x 9.6 cm (oval) Comments: remodeled original silencer with modified exhaust gas flow; very good fit without tension; The vehicle’s operating license expires after this intervention. Conclusion: modified original silencers with a different sound, which have a negative effect on both power delivery and torque and lead to the bike’s operating license being invalid

Laser – twin oval

Provider: Laser Germany, phone 02431/96990; Internet www.laserexhausts.com Price: 499 euros (rear silencer) Material: made entirely of stainless steel with polished casing Weight: 5.20 kg (rear silencer) Length of silencer: 33 cm Diameter: 12.4 x 9.5 cm (oval) Comments: easy-to-install pair of silencers with very good fit; Rubber stoppers for the retaining lugs of the silencer and the clamp not included in the scope of delivery, parts must be taken from the series exhaust EC type approval Conclusion: very well processed and precisely fitting retrofit silencers with a slightly lower weight than standard, but minimal losses in terms of power and torque

Staintune – BMW R 1100 S.

Provider: BN-Pipes, phone 08441/71719; Internet www.bn-pipes.de Price: 1263 Euro (complete with collector and connecting pipes) Material: made entirely of high-gloss polished stainless steel Weight: 5.2 kg (rear silencer); 3.6 kg (collector with connecting pipes) Length of silencer: 37 cmDiameter: 12.6 x 9.4 cm (oval) Comments: Installation requires a lot of time until the collector, the two connecting pipes and the two rear silencers to be attached are exactly aligned; thanks to a very good fit, however, overall easy assembly; EC type approval and catalytic converter variant in preparation Conclusion: relatively light, multi-part retrofit system with excellent workmanship and fit; However, power and torque values are far below those of the standard version in many areas
