Can the results of an accessory muffler test on a particular motorcycle model be transferred to other bikes??

Almost every day, readers in the editorial team ask about recommended accessory silencers for their bikes. When they say “recommendable”, they usually mean particularly high-performance specimens. According to the experience of past tests, more performance than with the original can rarely be achieved with an accessory damper. But good accessory copies are lighter, cheaper, often look better and are at least on par with the original in terms of performance.

But what should you do if your own motorcycle has not yet been tested? Unrestricted transfer of the results is certainly not possible. For example, a certain type of exhaust that is connected to a Yamaha R1 works well, doesn’t necessarily harmonize with a Honda VTR 1000 SP-1. Completely different engine concepts place very different demands on the silencers. But it could look very different for bikes of one displacement and performance class.

MOTORRAD therefore carried out a practical test with three sporty four-cylinder 600 series, all with injection, catalytic converter and four-in-one system: Honda CBR 600 FS, Kawasaki ZX-6R and Yamaha YZF-R6. A titanium muffler model with EC type approval from Bos, telephone 05941/4793, was selected to represent the many suppliers. The associated connecting pipes are optionally available with or without a catalytic converter.

Conclusion of the test: Regardless of whether with or without a catalytic converter, the power and torque curves of the accessory damper are practically congruent with the series part. The Bos damper works as well as the original on all three machines, which is at least an indication that a transfer is possible with similar technical requirements. In the future, however, only an exhaust test with the appropriate motorcycle type will provide the ultimate certainty.

On the subject of catalytic converters: The fact that in the present case neither power nor torque increases without a catalytic converter may surprise some, but it is easy to explain. The engine management is precisely matched to the catalytic converter, removing the catalytic converter does nothing without extensive programming work. There is currently no clear answer to the legal question of whether accessory systems without a catalytic converter can simply be installed. It is a legal gray area.
