the “Top seller” For the road, Fantic means Caballero 500 and is based on the first Fantic moped of the same name from 1969. In 2021, the Caballero Euro 5-compatible will be launched in five versions. All united: chassis and engine. The variants: Scrambler, Deluxe, Special Edition, Flat Track and Rally.

They are fired by the well-known 449 cubic single-cylinder, which will continue to be produced in China by Zongshen and will benefit from a new engine management system. Even before that, he was considered an extremely lively representative of his guild, in spite of it “only” 38.5 hp on the data sheet.

The single needs speeds

The motor shakes up to around 3,000 tours more than it pushes, delivers a usable torque from medium speeds and delights the heart with its revving pleasure. Until the rev limiter comes to a halt, it increases continuously and releases robust, socially acceptable sound into the environment. It feels like the stew is striving for even higher speeds, but the electronics won’t allow it. In return, the new ECU has a decent response at any speed. The direct connection from the throttle to the engine is pleasing, only an abrupt release of the throttle in the upper speed range causes easy pushing.

Still a pleasure to squeeze out the stew on the country road. The translation, which is very short for road use, requires a lot of manual work, but it also exudes a feeling of sportiness. The precise gear requires a bit of foot strength, but can be switched through nicely.

Soft chassis, good brakes

Fantic has not changed anything to the frame and brakes for the Euro 4 model. It wasn’t necessary either, since the Caballero has been convincing with its easy handling and stability since the first serve. Thanks to the 19-inch front wheel, the Caballero rolls more stable with increasing speed and can even handle more off-road driving than one or the other gravel road. The simple spring elements are pleasantly soft and keep the Caballero safely in balance even on rough terrain, but hard gasping on asphalt is not one of the bike’s favorite disciplines due to the soft design. When driving off-road, the quite wide tank is noticeable, which makes standing difficult.

The brake is of the simple kind with a 320-millimeter single disc at the front: it decelerates well, feels a bit dull after a full initial bite with increasing pressure on the lever. It is not the braking performance that suffers, but the controllability. Off-road, the Caballero can be easily stopped with one finger.

Clear equipment

The equipment of the Fantic Caballero is reduced to the essentials: the current speed can be clearly read in the small cockpit, more information requires a closer look. For the fuel level, for example, you are grateful for the additional warning light below the cockpit.

In addition, the Euro 5 model has a Conti-ABS that can be deactivated for off-road operation. And that’s it. Caballero drivers do not enjoy a lot of electronics, but the pure driving experience.

As already mentioned, the individual models hardly differ from one another technically. The main features: The rally model has 200 instead of 150 millimeters of spring travel at the front and rear, and the chassis can be fully adjusted here. The Flat Track variant is the only one with a 19-inch rear wheel. Otherwise there are hardly any differences.
