Brutal Euro 4 era

Content of

MV Agusta has lifted the Brutale 800 into the Euro 4 era and used it for an extensive model upgrade. What remains is an extremely sporty naked bike that is clearly better than its predecessor.

If you go purely according to the performance data, Euro 4 is a curse for the MV Agusta Brutale 800. Because of the new regulations from Brussels, the 800 naked bike loses nine hp on its predecessor. And who gives voluntarily performance? De facto has the necessary revision of the B.rutale 800 but overall extremely well done, because the team around R&D boss Brian Gillen has touched the entire motorcycle and did not stop at improving the exhaust gas and volume and adapting the engine and its electronic controls accordingly. The chassis and the entire electronics package have also been improved.

Brutal Euro 4 era

MV Agusta Brutale 800 in such driving situations now with the finest stability and accuracy.

The braking stability has also improved noticeably. Nevertheless, the MV Agusta Brutale 800 still impresses with its very sporty, very agile handling. She is a real athlete at all times. Snoring noses are therefore more likely to be confronted with weaknesses on this brutal than sports cannons. This includes, for example, the constant jerking that manifests itself when sneaking through the city traffic or leaning into the rush hour caravan. The aggressive character of the new MV Agusta Brutale 800 should fundamentally bother the faint of heart. This motor is a growling mutt, runs rough – but without annoying you – and constantly wants to get off the chain. Despite Euro 4, the engineers managed to wrest a little more torque from the triple in the lower speed regions.

MV Agusta Brutale 800 with more torque

It’s also nice that MV is getting better and better at ride-by-wire. The throttle response on the test bikes was perfect. There is nothing to complain about in any of the three permanently programmed modes “Rain”, “Normal” and “Sport”. Personally, I really liked the hard sport mode with ultra-direct response when you could run the MV Agusta Brutale 800. If you want to take a deep breath in between, you can do so while driving with the now simple mode selection with your right thumb and switch to “Normal”. Then the throttle response is gentler and the maximum power is limited to 90 hp. The engine brake works differently in the individual modes, as does the traction control, which can be set separately in eight stages. In a “custom” mode, every driver can create their own parameters from TC, throttle response and maximum power to engine braking – it works really well.

But even in this way, the MV Agusta Brutale 800 does not become a pious postman’s motorcycle. It is and remains a sporty iron. The seating position fits perfectly. This is not uncomfortable, but the pilot sits very front-wheel-oriented and positioned over the steering head in an aggressive position.

Designer Adrian Morton describes the basic design idea of the Brutale as “Faust” – and you can see that from circling the MV Agusta Brutale 800. The bike has a beefy construction around the engine. And so from the creative side, too, a lot of adrenaline and aggressiveness come into play. The older of us may remember the fist from the Beatles psychedelic film Yellow Submarine – it was up to no good either.

Coupling requires less manual force

But the MV Agusta Brutale 800 also proves its suitability for everyday use, namely in the form of the now hydraulically operated clutch with anti-hopping function, which requires far less manual force than in the predecessor. And the ABS, which can be switched off, which works safely without disrupting the basic sporting spirit of the Brutale through overly conservative tuning, helps through everyday life. Due to Euro 4, the MV Agusta Brutale 800 has of course also become quieter, and the designers have modified the beautiful three-end exhaust and the airbox accordingly. However, when it comes to sonic emotions, you will hardly miss anything on the bike, because enough of this inciting triple hissing hits the rider’s ear.

The sportsman is spoiled by a fully adjustable chassis, which is clearly on the taut side, but also offers enough comfort on everyday roads, as long as you don’t hang out the princess on the pea. The feedback from the components is right. The Pirelli Rosso III harmonizes with the MV Agusta Brutale 800 and the beautifully adjustable brake. You can use it to brake deeply and precisely into the dream curves on the house track, in order to then properly set the triple on the spurs for the next challenge. With this Brutale 800, fun should hardly have a hole. And who cares less about the few ridiculous horsepower in the end?
