The price range of the flip-up helmets tested here is greater than ever before in a MOTORCYCLE flip-up helmet comparison: The offer ranges from 139 to 649 euros (each in the basic version; decor costs a considerable surcharge). However, the differences between the helmets are similar; you can feel it clearly when you are on the move at over 80 km / h or sometimes 180 km / h for a long time.

  • Easy to put on and take off
  • excellent fit, head is perfectly enclosed, pleasant lining, very comfortable
  • good suitability for glasses
  • very easy chin part operation
  • perfect ventilation
  • excellent aerodynamics
  • very low noise level
  • Almost perfect visor with a huge field of vision, extremely easy visor change

  • lavish furnishings
  • top processing

Noticed negatively:

  • Design may take some getting used to
  • Light gap under the sun visor a little too big
  • Impact absorption values below average
  • price

Conclusion:

After the laboratory tests, things looked bleak for the C4: all values in the green ECE range, but clearly at the end of the test field. In practice, however, the Magdeburg man achieved a grandiose result: full points in four out of six categories, twice just one point below. Close but deserved test win!

MOTORRAD verdict: very good

  • perfect ventilation
  • excellent aerodynamics
  • satisfactory noise level

  • price

Conclusion:

The same number of points and the same test result as in 2015 for the 6 Evo system helmet – no progress? But yes, the System 7 is significantly lighter and can be converted into a jet helmet. But it is also a bit louder and takes some getting used to. His biggest plus: He was the only one below HIC 1000.

MOTORRAD verdict: very good

  • Easy to put on and take off
  • very good fit, head is very well enclosed, very pleasant lining, very comfortable
  • satisfactory suitability for glasses
  • good ventilation on the top of the head
  • very good aerodynamics
  • very easy visor change
  • good shock absorption values
  • very good equipment
  • very good workmanship

Noticed negatively:

  • Chin part operation (double lever) takes getting used to (first aiders!);
  • Visor ventilation position too far;
  • Sun visor may hit the nose, lever positioned unfavorably;
  • high noise level;
  • Chin part ventilation practically without function

Conclusion:

The previous model, the X-1003, scored an in 2015 “very good”. The successor is not worse, the competition is just tougher and the quality level is higher overall. For fans of the legendary X-lite sneaker feeling, the same applies: Buy, you won’t go wrong!

MOTORRAD verdict: good

Clever role model: The LS2 looks suspiciously like Shark, but fortunately it does a lot better.

The LS2 FF399 Valiant is fixed with a ratchet lock. The LS2 FF399 Valiant is available in the colors white, black, matt black, matt titanium and chrome.

Noticed positively:

  • Easy to put on and take off;
  • very good fit, head is very well enclosed, very comfortable lining;
  • very good suitability for glasses;
  • very easy chin rest operation;
  • exemplary sun visor operation and very good coverage;
  • perfect ventilation;
  • very good aerodynamics;
  • satisfactory noise level;
  • practical visor, still satisfactory shock absorption values;
  • good to very good workmanship; price

Noticed negatively:

  • Field of vision limited to athletes upwards a little too early;
  • Changing the visor requires some practice and strength;
  • high weight

Conclusion:

A little less weight, a little quieter – and it would be easy”very good” been in. Even so, the LS2 novelty is a really good helmet that comes with its”180 degree chin section” can also be worn as a real jet helmet with a clear conscience. Top price-performance ratio.

MOTORRAD verdict: good

5th place: Harley-Davidson Capstone S.

The Harley-Davison Capstone S. Modular Helmet is available in sizes XS to XXL. Its helmet shell is made of polycarbonate. According to the manufacturer, it weighs 1750 grams in size L, we measured 1750 grams when reweighing.

Flip-up motorcycle helmets between 139 and 649 euros in the test

mps studio

The only test candidate with a double-D chinstrap fastener – which with a little practice doesn’t have to be a disadvantage, on the contrary.

The Harley-Davison Capstone S. Modular Helmet is fixed with a double-D fastener. The Harley-Davison Capstone S. Modular Helmet is available in matt black.

The scope of delivery includes: wind deflector on the chin, sun visor and pinlock preparation.

  •  Easy to put on and take off
  • very good fit, head well enclosed, very comfortable lining
  • very good suitability for glasses
  • easy chin rest operation
  • very effective overhead ventilation; Practical visor ventilation position and locking
  • Satisfactory to good aerodynamics (up to 150 km / h completely neutral, from 170 km / h very slight restlessness)
  • satisfactory noise level
  • very easy visor change
  • decent shock absorption values, price

Noticed negatively:

  • Sun visor operation on the top of the head somewhat cumbersome and antiquated, sun visor may hit the nose;
  • Chin ventilation only minimally felt;
  • relatively high weight;
  • Pinlock visor not included

Conclusion:

Harley in the helmet test – that’s never been done before. And then get the best buy. Respect! And no real surprise, because as the HJC IS-MAX II, the helmet achieved the same result in 2015. However with ratchet lock. By the way, the HJC is still available from 199 euros.

MOTORRAD verdict: good

6th place: Bayard FP-25 S

The flip-up helmet Bayard FP-25 S is available in sizes XS to XXL. Its helmet shell is made of polycarbonate. According to the manufacturer, it weighs 1550 grams in size L, we measured 1626 grams when reweighing.

Flip-up motorcycle helmets between 139 and 649 euros in the test

Photos: mps-Studio

Be careful with the size information, the Bayard is very large. And it’s pleasantly comfortable, but very loud.

The Bayard FP-25 S is fixed with a ratchet lock. The Bayard FP-25 S is available in matt black and matt silver.

The scope of delivery includes: breathing air deflector, wind deflector on the chin, sun visor and pinlock preparation.

  • very easy to put on and take off
  • comfortable lining, satisfactory fit
  • very good suitability for glasses
  • Sun visor covers well
  • Effective upper head ventilation, very easy to use ventilation slider
  • Satisfactory aerodynamics (only minimal impulse when looking sideways from 150 km / h)
  • relatively low weight
  • easy change of visor
  • decent shock absorption values
  • price

Noticed negatively:

  • Visor ventilation position much too far, very coarse visor notch
  • Chin ventilation hardly effective, ventilation slide and chin part opening lever too close together
  • Sun visor slider stiff
  • high noise level from 80 km / h, extremely loud over 180 km / h
  • Pinlock visor not included
  • Stripping attempt failed

Conclusion:

The relatively inexpensive helmet plays happily in the upper test field and offers a surprising amount for the money. In terms of equipment and aeroacoustics, however, you notice the tight calculation. The price-performance ratio is still very good, a good choice as an entry-level or second helmet.

MOTORRAD verdict: good

7th place: Shark Evoline Series 3

The flip-up helmet Shark Evoline Series 3 is available in sizes XS to XL. Its helmet shell is made of polycarbonate. According to the manufacturer, it weighs 1715 grams in size L, we measured 1790 grams when reweighing.

Flip-up motorcycle helmets between 139 and 649 euros in the test

mps studio

It’s cozy, almost plush inside. If you want to close the chin part in one go, you need a little practice

The Bayard FP-25 S is fixed with a ratchet lock. The Shark Evoline Series 3 is available in white, black, matt black and eleven decors.

The scope of delivery includes: sun visor, anti-fogging system, preparation for communication system and P / J homologation.

Noticed positively:

  • Easy to put on and take off
  • Fog-free visor even without Pinlock
  • good fit, head is well enclosed, pleasant lining, very comfortable
  • good aerodynamics (over 170 km / h minimal lift and slight vibration)
  • relatively low noise level
  • Practical visor, easy visor change
  • good shock absorption values
  • good to very good workmanship

Noticed negatively:

  • Opening and, above all, closing of the chin part a bit awkward;
  • only partially suitable for glasses;
  • Sun visor operation on the top of the head somewhat cumbersome and antiquated, hole in the upper edge of the sun visor disturbing the field of vision
  • very heavy weight

Conclusion:

The better is the good enemy. And in this case it is called LS2, because the Chinese almost certainly had the Shark as a model – and did almost everything equally or even better. Which doesn’t change the fact that the Shark with his “180 degree chin part” is still a good helmet.

MOTORRAD verdict: good

8th place: Germot GM 950

The flip-up helmet Germot GM 950 is available in sizes XS to XL. Its helmet shell is made of a polycarbonate mix. According to the manufacturer, it weighs 1560 grams in size L, we measured 1574 grams when reweighing.

Flip-up motorcycle helmets between 139 and 649 euros in the test

mps studio

It gets really loud in here, and bigger noses are also a bit at risk. But at least the Germot is good in the wind.

The Germot GM 950 is fixed with a ratchet lock. The Germot GM 950 is available in the colors matt black, matt gray and matt black decor.

The scope of delivery includes: breathing air deflector, wind deflector on the chin, sun visor and pinlock preparation.

Replacement visors for the Germot GM 950 are available in clear and tinted versions (24.59 euros each). Provider: Germot, www.germot.de

Noticed positively:

  • Easy to put on and take off
  • comfortable lining, good suitability for glasses
  • easy chin rest operation
  • practical visor ventilation position
  • good aerodynamics; low weight
  • very easy visor change
  • good shock absorption values
  • price

Noticed negatively:

  • Unsatisfactory fit
  • presses on forehead, too airy on the back of the head
  • overall very inhomogeneous
  • The sun visor may hit the nose, the controls are hooked
  • Chin part ventilation practically without function
  • very high noise level from 100 km / h
  • mixed processing (including edges that have not been deburred)

Conclusion:

The purchase price is very attractive, but Germot can’t do magic either. After all, the bargain makes a lot of points in terms of shock absorption and aerodynamics. But it is clearly nothing for highway kilometer eaters, but maybe for price-sensitive country road cruisers.

MOTORRAD verdict: satisfactory

9th place: Marushin M-410

The flip-up helmet Marushin M-410 S is available in sizes XS to XXL. Its helmet shell is made of fiberglass. According to the manufacturer, it weighs 1550 grams in size L, we measured 1606 grams when reweighing.

Flip-up motorcycle helmets between 139 and 649 euros in the test

mps studio

It’s easy to get in and even better to get out again. The chin strap sits very far back and may press on the larynx.

The Maraushin M-410 is fixed with a ratchet lock. The Marushin M-410 is available in white, black, matt black and silver.

The scope of delivery includes: breathing air deflector, wind deflector on the chin, sun visor and pinlock visor.

The flip-up helmet is made in China, its ECE approval mark E 13 comes from Luxembourg. It costs 349.00 euros.
Replacement visors for the Marushin M-410 are available in the versions clear, tinted and mirrored (59/59/69 euros). Provider: Hostettler, www.hostettler.de

Noticed positively:

  • Easy to put on and take off
  • good suitability for glasses
  • Sun visor covers well
  • practical visor ventilation position
  • effective upper head ventilation (slider but stiff)
  • relatively low weight
  • easy change of visor
  • decent shock absorption values

Noticed negatively:

  • Unsatisfactory fit, presses on the forehead, too airy on the back of the head, overall very inhomogeneous;
  • Chin part ventilation practically without function;
  • Sun visor may hit the nose, operation hooked;
  • Chin part ventilation practically without function;
  • very high noise level from 100 km / h;
  • moderate aerodynamics, vibrates from 150 km / h, wanders easily, clear impulse when looking sideways;
  • mixed processing (including edges that have not been deburred)

Conclusion:

For 349 euros, the Marushin vies for customers in the no-man’s-land. It won’t be easy, because there are plenty of much cheaper flip-up helmets that can actually do everything better. The price-performance ratio is not right, it is too expensive for what is offered, and no fiberglass shell helps.

MOTORRAD verdict: satisfactory

10th place: Nexo flip-up helmet Fiberglas Travel

the Nexo The fiberglass Travel flip-up helmet is available in sizes XS to XL. Its helmet shell is made of fiberglass. According to the manufacturer, it weighs 1690 grams in size L, we measured 1776 grams when reweighing.

Flip-up motorcycle helmets between 139 and 649 euros in the test

mps studio

It’s usually a bit louder under the heavy fiberglass shell, and there’s also a bit more to do with aerodynamics.

The Nexo flip-up helmet Fiberglas Travel is fixed with a ratchet fastener. The Nexo flip-up helmet fiberglass Travel is available in matt black.

The scope of delivery includes: wind deflector on the chin, sun visor and pinlock preparation.

The flip-up helmet is made in China, its ECE approval mark E 13 comes from Luxembourg. It costs 249.00 euros.
Replacement visors for the Nexo flip-up helmet Fiberglas Travel are available in the clear version (29.99 euros each). Provider: Polo, www.polo-motorrad.de

Noticed positively:

  • Relatively easy to put on and take off (but a bit difficult with glasses)
  • satisfactory suitability for glasses
  • easy chin rest operation
  • effective overhead ventilation
  • practical visor ventilation position
  • easy change of visor
  • satisfactory shock absorption values

Noticed negatively:

  • Partly moderate fit, may press on forehead and back of the head, overall somewhat inhomogeneous
  • Pinlock upper edge permanently annoying in the already small field of vision
  • somewhat fiddly sun visor operation, relatively large light gap
  • Chin part ventilation practically without function
  • very high noise level even at high speed on a country road
  • moderate aerodynamics from 130 km / h, strong vibrations over 150 km / h, very strong over 170 km / h
  • high weight

Conclusion:

Well meant is not always well done. The active polo helmet buyers may have let themselves be overwhelmed by the fiberglass hype, but the practicality fell by the wayside. The Nexo is not a bad helmet, but the competition is driving it left and right in the face.

MOTORRAD verdict: satisfactory

11th place: Premier Genius U9BM

The flip-up helmet premier Genius U9BM is available in sizes XS to XL. Its helmet shell is made of thermoplastic. According to the manufacturer wieger in size L 1680 grams, we measured 1704 grams when reweighing.

Flip-up motorcycle helmets between 139 and 649 euros in the test

mps studio

With a flat forehead and an even flatter top of the head, this can be very comfortable, otherwise not really. It will be loud in any case.

The Premier Genius U9BM is fixed with a ratchet lock. The Premier Genius U9BM is available in white and matt black.

The scope of delivery includes: breathing air deflector, wind deflector on the chin, sun visor and pinlock preparation.

The flip-up helmet is made in China, its ECE approval mark E 13 comes from Luxembourg. It costs 179.00 euros.
Replacement visors for the Premier Genius U9BM are available in the clear version for 39.00 euros. Provider: Grand Canyon, www.grandcanyonbike.de

Noticed positively:

  • Easy to put on and take off
  • good suitability for glasses
  • easy chin rest operation
  • adequate ventilation on the top of the head
  • satisfactory aerodynamics (very easy life of its own over 170 km / h)
  • Easy to use sun visor
  • very easy visor change
  • price

Noticed negatively:

  • Partly moderate fit, may press on forehead and back of the head, overall somewhat inhomogeneous;
  • Pinlock upper edge permanently annoying in the already small field of vision;
  • somewhat fiddly sun visor operation, relatively large light gap;
  • Chin part ventilation practically without function;
  • very high noise level already from the highway speed;
  • moderate aerodynamics from 130 km / h, strong vibrations over 150 km / h, very strong over 170 km / h;
  • high weight

Conclusion:

In the product description is the sentence:”The Genius is one of the quietest system helmets on the market.” Nope, it isn’t, on the contrary! And otherwise the Chinese Italian is not really convincing either. Especially the fit and visor / sun visor weaknesses are annoying.

MOTORRAD verdict: satisfactory

12th place: LZR (Lazer) MH2

The LZR (Lazer) MH2 flip-up helmet is available in sizes XS to XL. Its helmet shell is made of thermoplastic. According to the manufacturer, it weighs 1650 grams in size L, we measured 1726 grams when reweighing.

Flip-up motorcycle helmets between 139 and 649 euros in the test

mps studio

Fit? Then you have to look here (in vain). The chin part opening button is also hidden, but can be found.

The LZR (Lazer) MH2 is fixed with a ratchet lock. The LZR (Lazer) MH2 is available in the colors matt white, matt black, signal yellow and signal orange.

The scope of delivery includes: breathing air deflector, wind deflector on the chin, sun visor and pinlock preparation.

The flip-up helmet is made in China, its ECE approval mark E 13 comes from Luxembourg. It costs EUR 139.00.
Replacement visors for the LZR (Lazer) MH2 are available in the clear version (29.00 euros). Provider: Cima, www.lazerhelmets.com

Noticed positively:

  • Easy to put on and take off;
  • very good suitability for glasses;
  • Sun visor covers well;
  • easy change of visor;
  • decent shock absorption values, price

Noticed negatively:

  • Very unsatisfactory fit, no clearly defined fit, may press in the cheek area
  • Chin part operation inconvenient, opening button hidden, closing only possible with a lot of effort
  • Visor locking not practical, cannot be opened from the lowest position while driving
  • Very high noise level from 80 km / h, over 150 km / h extremely loud
  • Unsatisfactory aerodynamics, wandering strongly, strong impulse when looking sideways
  • Ventilation slider on top of the head very difficult to use and, like on the chin, largely without function

Conclusion:

The makers of the well-known helmet brand Lazer have not only saved on the vowels of their entry-level model. The discount offer weakens in every nook and cranny, but at least delivers a solid HIC value. Nevertheless: This helmet is not cheap, it is cheap.

Reasons for price differences for flip-up helmets

The standard equipment for flip-up helmets of all price ranges now includes a fold-out sun visor, one-handed operation of the chin part and ratchet lock. A removable and washable lining as well as at least the preparation for the assembly of an anti-fog inner visor (mostly traded under the brand name Pinlock) as well. A solid helmet bag has long been a must-have item.

So how do the differences between the flip-up helmets and their prices come about? On the one hand, the material of the helmet shell. A distinction is made between thermoplastics and thermosets. Thermoplastic shells (e.g. polycarbonate or ABS) are largely made automatically from liquefied plastic granulate in injection molding machines. Duroplastics (known as GRP or fiberglass helmets), on the other hand, usually require significantly more manual work, allow lower quantities in comparison and are therefore more expensive to manufacture. The production of a carbon shell for motorcycle helmets can increase production costs even more, since the raw material carbon fiber – at least in top quality – is usually quite expensive.

Motorcycle helmets made of thermoplastics have long been considered inferior; Fiberglass helmets were the measure of all things. If this wisdom was ever true, today it is largely out of date. Modern thermoplastic helmets no longer crumble at the first opportunity and certainly not in real accidents. Rather, an aged, worn-out interior makes an accident-free helmet ready for replacement.

Even if some providers use the buzzword “Fiberglass helmet” emphasize very much, the material of the helmet shell alone says nothing about the overall quality of a motorcycle helmet. Seven of the twelve test participants have a thermoplastic shell; the bottom line is that three of them do significantly better than the two cheapest offers of the supposedly better ones” Fiberglass group.

With the flip-up helmet, the overall package has to be right, and if it is in a good relationship to the purchase price, you can get up to 5 bonus points in the final evaluation for the price-performance ratio – new in a MOTORCYCLE helmet test. Please be careful of wrong conclusions: Zero bonus points in this category only mean that the price asked is appropriate for the service offered. No more and no less.

This is how MOTORRAD tested the flip-up helmets

Five specimens of each folding arm model were tested: three in size M, one each in size L and XL. Two M specimens were subjected to the shock absorption test at TuV Rheinland in Cologne. The three other test samples were tested in practice.

At temperatures of around 14 ° C and continuous rain in early autumn, three MOTORRAD testers tested the flip-up helmets on the largely speed limit-free A 81 motorway between Heilbronn and Wurzburg and on the surrounding country roads. The MOTORRAD endurance testers Honda Fireblade and Ducati Multistrada 950 served as mobile pedestals.

After a slight swing at the recommended motorway speed, with initial contact being made with the ventilation slides and sun visor levers on the folding helmets, the MOTORRAD test drivers increased the speed to 200 km / h. Most of the test drives took place between 160 and 180 km / h. Experience has shown that aerodynamic and aeroacoustic differences can be worked out quite clearly in this area. After each flip-up helmet test round, the driving impressions were recorded and conspicuous details were photographed.

In order to be able to classify the driving impressions even better later, the “Dry test” Once again, the handling, fit and workmanship of the flip-up helmets were assessed calmly, for which additional colleagues who were not affected by driving impressions were involved.

Test procedures from TuV and MOTORRAD

Successful testing according to the helmet test standard ECE R 22.05 is a basic requirement for being eligible for the MOTORCYCLE flip-up helmet test. However, the editors consider the mundane re-measurement of the ECE shock absorption values to be superfluous, because the helmet manufacturers themselves observe each other closely: Peter Schaudt, helmet expert at TuV Rheinland, confirms this: “As soon as a provider with new models appears on the market, we receive them from competitors to check the ECE values.”

In the opinion of MOTORRAD, Fener only defines a minimum requirement for motorcycle helmets with sometimes absurd test specifications, in which the drop tests take place with helmets frozen to minus 20 ° C. In addition, the impact points are precisely defined in the European standard, which encourages some helmet providers to reinforce the test points accordingly. This is completely legal, but it makes critics scoff: You can use this method to knit even a bobble hat so that it is ECE-compliant.

In 2009, MOTORRAD, together with TuV expert Schaudt and accident researcher and biomechanic Florian Schueler, developed a practical test procedure for helmets. Since then, the “MOTORCYCLE helmet standard” proven in numerous comparative tests. Central point: the helmet continues to fall from a height of around 3 meters on the test stand of TuV Rheinland. However, it does not hit the ECE edge anvil, but a real guardrail carrier, a so-called sigma post, which, according to Florian Schueler, often plays a tragic role in accidents.

The flip-up helmets were also tested at room temperature; the impact on the left and right side occurred at both low and high speed. According to ECE, an acceleration value of 275 g is permissible in the event of an impact on the test anvil. The probe, equipped with sensors, forwards the g-value to a computer, which calculates the HIC value with the help of other parameters (duration of force action).

This “Head Injury Criterion” Is considered by doctors and biomechanics as an informative value for making statements about possible brain / skull injuries. The ECE allows a maximum HIC value of 2400. An abstract number beyond good and evil. The MOTORRAD expert crew agrees: “In the MOTORRAD test, HIC 1000 should be feasible!” With one exception, the flip-up helmets tested are still a bit away from this desired value, but at least they easily meet the minimum ECE requirements.

Before the chin part hit, all helmets had to pass the stripping test when they were open. A maximum twist angle of 30 degrees is the ECE upper limit. A value that, with the exception of the Bayard, all helmets also approved as jet helmets met.
