Foil license plate for mopeds from March 2021
Insurance number to stick on

The three-year test phase for the film labels for all insurance labels that change annually will start in March 2021. The solution should be simpler, cheaper and more forgery-proof than previous metal signs.

Foil instead of sheet metal, is the motto from March 1, 2021 for all small motorcycles such as mopeds, mopeds and 50cc scooters as well as for four-wheeled light vehicles and motorized wheelchairs. Federal Minister Andreas Scheuer on this: “We are starting the practical test: From March 1st, moped drivers can simply stick their license plates on as a film. This is citizen-friendly, practical and conserves resources.”

The test phase is scheduled for three years. During this time, the foil labels can be used as an alternative to the metal signs. The necessary exception ordinance was announced in the Federal Law Gazette on August 31, 2020. After the test phase, it will be decided whether the exception will become the rule.

Less greenhouse gas emissions

Around two million insurance labels are currently made from aluminum and sheet steel in Germany. After a year the old ones are disposed of and new ones are installed. The new insurance labels for sticking on could ensure fewer greenhouse gas emissions.

Foil labels have proven their worth on e-scooters

The principle is not new. Since July 2019, insurers in Germany have been gathering experience with film labels with small electric vehicles, better known as e-scooters or electric scooters. The small e-scooters drive a maximum of 25 km / h and need a small adhesive insurance label that proves the existing liability insurance. Based on this model, license plates can now be stuck on small motorcycles in the test phase.

For this purpose, the film is glued to a carrier plate that is attached to the vehicle. The glued license plate can then be removed every year and replaced with a new one – the carrier plate, regardless of whether it is made of plastic or metal, always remains the same.

The foil label is a forgery-proof hologram, which was not present in conventional sheet metal signs.

Conclusion

Easier, cheaper and forgery-proof – the new foil insurance labels to stick on are a tiny change for vehicle owners and insurers, but above all they can save resources and, after a change, also simplify the insurance process.
