On the last weekend in October 2019, the time has come again: At the 50th edition of the Hamburg Police Show, the Hanseatic city’s motorcycle squadron shows two- and three-wheel acrobatics at the highest level. The audience often holds their breath during their spectacular performances, the artistic performances are so great, the formations are so close.

The Hamburg police will contest four shows next weekend. With two appearances each, in which 500 and 600 BMWs from the years 1956 to 1964 (former police machines) as well as current service RTs are used.

However, all tickets for the current shows and all appearances in 2020 are already completely sold out. As a little consolation for those who are not allowed to watch live, there is a video here that guarantees goosebumps. And think positively: For the Hamburg Police Show on October 30th and 31st, 2021, the cards will literally be reshuffled. Especially the Hamburg police Motorcycle relay will demonstrate their tricks at various festivals beforehand.

The machines

The 500 and 600 BMWs built between 1956 and 1964 were on patrol duty in Hamburg until the mid-1980s. They have been an integral part of the show since 1977. Not just for nostalgic reasons: Good-natured instead of speedy, they are ideal for tricky maneuvers in confined spaces. In addition, their standard frames and metal mudguards are very stable. For a kind of “motorcycle ballet” as a second show, the officials use the latest company bikes, namely air-cooled R 1200 RT.

The group

The Hamburg police force has been in existence since 1977. It appears as a special form of public relations work at events in Hamburg as well as at home and abroad – even in Canada. Police officers from their mid-twenties to mid-60s are active in the force, women and men from various departments, right up to the water police. They do the necessary training before the shows and maintain the motorcycles in their free time.

The acrobatics

Proven good drivers are required here. The passengers, on the other hand, need artistic skills, a good sense of balance and a good head for heights and good nerves: the five “hangers” have to jump in a meticulously coordinated manner onto the front mudguards of the pyramid approaching them. This formation with up to 27 people is the highlight of the show.
