At first everyone loved the Harley-Davidson XR 1200. Then hardly anyone wanted to buy it as a new machine. And now, some time after production was discontinued, it is in great demand again. That is probably the fate of all (too) sporty Harleys – history repeats itself.

Three times in over 100 years, Harley-Davidson tried to bring a particularly sporty Sportster to the motorcyclist community. The attempt failed three times: The XLCR (“Cafe Racer”) had its tires flat in the showrooms from 1977. The 1983 XR 1000 didn’t do any better with an overpriced combination of brutal engine and cucumber chassis. Today both are cult and the most sought-after and expensive Sportster derivatives.

Whether it was shown as a prototype at Intermot 2006 and sold from model year 2008 Harley-Davidson XR 1200 remains to be seen. But the chances of the dirt tracker homage, which was initially only built for export and will only be available in the USA from 2009/10, are not bad. There were never two opinions about the 91 HP engine: a wonderful hum with a lot of pressure from the middle and lots of “good vibrations”, without any airs and pleasantly stable. Suspension elements and front brake initially did not meet the athlete’s demands, but with the Harley-Davidson XR 1200 X everything got better – except for the sales figures.

2008 First model year Harley-Davidson XR 1200. Colors: black, orange, silver; 10,990 euros.
2010 First model year Harley-Davidson XR 1200 X. Differences: fork and struts fully adjustable; new front brake; Color: Matte Black; 11,990 euros. Changes (both models): new oil tank, new catalytic converter, engine control unit and fuses better protected from moisture.
2011 XR 1200 no longer in the range. Additional color for XR 1200 X: matt white. Technical changes: modified stator connection on the Lima, valve cover seals, side stand bracket.
2012 Last model year XR 1200 X. Changes: Michelin instead of Dunlop tires, new ignition and steering lock.
Market situation

Clear used market. The prices have leveled off at a fairly high level.
From a seller’s point of view, the valley of tears is likely to have passed – used Harley-Davidson XR 1200s will probably not be much cheaper any more. The combination of a short construction period and a relatively small number of items has always been a guarantee that second-hand prices will settle at a high level very quickly and then no longer fall. To make matters worse, in contrast to some Japanese makes, Harley-Davidson dealers have virtually no stocks or exhibition / demonstration machines that can be sold for little money after production of a model has been discontinued. The second-hand market is therefore quite clear, and for less than 6500 euros, you can only get accident machines or “sweethearts” from Lithuania, Poland, Hungary or Italy. The majority of the offer from German countries is just under or a little over 8,000 euros. An astonishingly large number of used machines are already in second hand in their relatively short life, which suggests that a not inconsiderable number of new machine buyers have “sold” themselves. The XR 1200 is simply not an athlete in the conventional sense. This also applies somewhat to a lesser extent to the Harley-Davidson XR 1200 X, which is even rarer to find and is still the aforementioned 1000 euros more expensive as a used one.

What applies to the normal Sportster also applies to the Sport-Sportster: The standard technology cannot become a problem – it is considered to be rock-solid and stable. Problems are usually only caused – if at all – by the owner’s reluctance to renovate. Sportys are traditionally real (beginner) craft shops, and not everyone who works as a turn signal, handlebar or exhaust builder is a gifted screwdriver. In addition, some XR first-time owners came from (Japanese) third-party brands, which was not necessarily conducive to understanding the rather archaic technology. Keyword: (Not) warming up an air-cooled, large-displacement, ancient engine. The following applies to the inspection: Better to take a closer look at the previous owner than at the motorcycle. And if in doubt, take a test drive at the Harley dealer and have a quick check whether the modifications to the Harley-Davidson XR 1200 are well done.
