Touring equipment put to the acid test

Holger Hertneck

07/17/2008

They are clearly the mile-eaters of the motorcycle family and dare to bike in any weather and all year round: the touring riders. When athletes and frayed cruiser drivers crammed into tight leather have long been looking for protection in the cafe from approaching storms, they turn “real biker” an extra lap completely relaxed. This is made possible by wind- and waterproof functional suits, gloves and boots, in which the tourer fraction is primarily interested. MOTORRAD has put the latest touring products to the test over thousands of kilometers in the toughest conditions.

Test conditions

In such conditions, any hint of a good mood disappears.

If you drive south in spring and cross the Alps in the process, you should plan for bad weather and low temperatures as a precaution. Snowfall until May is not uncommon in the mountains. In southern Italy, on the other hand, you can sweat at 25 degrees and more as early as March. At the beginning of April, seven MOTORRAD testers experienced this entire range of weather conditions on their 4,300-kilometer journey to Sardinia and back. The highest requirements for men, machines and equipment. Here are the daily logs in detail:

Day 1: Stuttgart – Switzerland (Gotthard Tunnel) –Livorno (920 km). Temperatures: minus 1 to plus 18 degrees; Rain in Germany, snowfall in Switzerland, rain showers and a mix of sun and clouds in Italy. Not very fun.

Day 2: Sardinia (470 km). Temperatures: 12 to 26 degrees; bright to cloudy; dry. The pure joy.

Day 3: Sardinia (540 km). Temperatures: 10 to 23 degrees; Sun-cloud mix with lots of rain showers. Totally okay.

Day 4: Livorno – Tuscany – Cinque Terre (690 km). Temperatures: 12 to 20 degrees; Sun-cloud mix with rain showers until the afternoon, continuous rain in the evening. And that in the middle of Italy.

Day 5: Cinque Terre – Tuscany – Cinque Terre (530 km). Temperatures: 10 to 19 degrees; Heavy rain in the morning, from midday a mixture of sun and clouds with sometimes torrential rain. Typical April.

Day 6: Cinque Terre – Tuscany – Cinque Terre (450 km); Temperatures: 10 to 17 degrees; mostly very cloudy with heavy rain showers, only occasional sunny sections. Okay.

Day 7: Cinque Terre – Austria (Brenner) –Stuttgart (700 km). Temperatures: 3 to 18 degrees; Occasionally cloudy, occasional rain showers, snowfall on the Brenner, but also longer dry and sunny sections. Unfortunately already back home.

Tour preparation

Helmets, boots, textile suits and gloves

Gargolov

On longer tours you should be prepared for possible weather conditions of all kinds.

A big motorcycle tour needs to be planned precisely. If you start in a hurry, you are sure to forget something you need at home. Most things can be bought on the go, but with appropriate preparation you can save these additional costs. Calculate half a day.

The great art of a vacation trip is to limit yourself without sacrificing something important. Does it have to be two pairs of shoes or is one enough? Do I need five T-shirts or is two plus a tube of detergent enough? Anyone traveling in a group should also make arrangements about how their luggage will be distributed. Who will take the lock, who will take the breakdown spray, who will take the tarpaulin, who will take the stove, who will take what tools?

Sensible route planning is also important – especially if certain daily destinations have to be reached (for example a booked ferry or a hotel). If you drive a lot on small country roads or winding mountain passes, you shouldn’t expect too high average speeds. In such cases, shortcuts via motorways and expressways are of great advantage in order to arrive at your destination on time if necessary or after a breakdown.

Tips for buying a suit

Here are some things to watch out for:

wind and waterproof, breathable membrane; Connection zipper between jacket and pants; removable thermal lining; Sleeve cuffs with large width adjustment range so that glove cuffs fit underneath; Ventilation zips; close-fitting, high collar; enough outside pockets, ideally waterproof and not too small; waterproof jacket inside pockets; Reflective material; Front zip covered or padded to prevent drafts; Width adjustment options at the jacket hem, waist, sleeves and cuffs as well as at the ankles; well-fitting, comfortable CE protectors that can be removed for cleaning on shoulders, elbows, knees, hips and, if possible, on the back; areas at risk of falling reinforced with abrasion-resistant textile material; easy cleaning in the washing machine (laundry symbol); Trouser legs still long enough even when sitting.

Tips for buying a helmet

The most important points: pay attention to ECE-R 22.05 (the sticker is usually on the chinstrap, see also page 121); firm, pressure point-free fit; large field of view; anti-fog visor; easy-to-use ventilation buttons; tool-free visor change; removable interior; Fixation option for the end of the chinstrap; light weight; Fit for people who wear (sun) glasses. On the test drive: noticeable ventilation function; low noise level; good aerodynamics (no lift).

Tips for buying touring boots

For motorcyclists there are, among other things, sports, cross and waterproof touring boots. The latter are the egg-laying woolly milk sows under the feet – with them you should pay attention to the following points: pressure point-free seat; stable, non-slip sole; slight heel for optimal hold on the notch; Reinforcements in areas at risk of falling such as ankles, shins, heels; firm fixation in the ankle area (anti-slip protection); high mobility when driving; sufficient comfort when walking; abrasion-resistant outer material (ideally leather); Reflective material; stable closure; Shaft width adjustment; Switching reinforcement on the left shoe; Test the water resistance as soon as possible after purchase. Complain immediately if water enters.

Tips for buying gloves

The requirements for sport, cross, winter or touring fingerlings differ considerably in some cases. The following are the most important selection criteria for touring gloves: make sure they fit tightly, free of pressure marks and have sufficiently long fingers (the fingertips should not hit them while driving); close-fitting Velcro strap on the wrist prevents slipping off in the event of a fall; additional Velcro fastener on the cuff ensures a tight fit and enables the glove to be pushed under the jacket sleeve; Reinforcements (possibly hard shells) on the knuckles and the edge of the hand increase protection; Even when grasping the handlebars, no creases should form on the palm (this leads to blisters on the palms of the hands in the long run); Check gloves with membrane for water resistance after purchase; Models made of abrasion-resistant leather are safer than those made of textile material; too thick, long cuffs often do not fit under jacket sleeves; high dexterity makes clutch and braking easier; thick, angular cushions in the area of the fingers harbor the risk of catching in the event of a fall, which leads to injuries.
