Electric motorcycle concept is developed in Munich

The Indian motorcycle manufacturer Hero would like to add electrically powered motorcycles to its portfolio. The corresponding platform is to be developed at Hero’s technical center in Munich.

A.At the previous Annual General Meeting, Hero Motocorp Chairman Pawan Munjal stated that the Indian motorcycle giant is on the right track with its plans to enter the electric two-wheeler market.

The finance portal Moneycontrol is now reporting what to expect. The Indians are currently having a new premium concept for electric motorcycles developed at Hero Motocorp’s technology center in Germany (HTCG). Further electrical concepts are also being worked on. The development partner is the Hero development center in India.

Sporty concept expected

The electrically powered prototype will be called e.US, the abbreviation for "electric ultra sport" stands. So a sporty two-wheeler concept can be expected, which is supposed to be presented this year (2020). However, the Hero e.US will not be a bike with a chance of series production; the Indians want to use it to test the acceptance of electric motorcycles in the premium segment.

It is clear that the future Hero electric motorcycles will not run under the Hero Electric label. Hero Electric is a well-known brand in India and the market leader for small electric scooters, but does not belong to the motorcycle manufacturer. Hero Motorcorp has its own electrical division, Ather Energy, which is supposed to serve the cheap segment. The new large electric motorcycles will probably have their own label, but they will definitely be made in India.

Conclusion

The Indian state relies heavily on electromobility in its mobility plans. No wonder that Hero, as one of the largest national two-wheeler manufacturers, is working on electrical concepts.
