After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the western part of the Thuringian Forest is no longer too far from the geographical center of the Federal Republic. Nevertheless, the region is still unknown to many, which should change. Great, sometimes very varied routes, dark forests and rolling hills offer us motorcyclists everything we want. The traffic density is almost zero, the monitoring body has other things to do than control bikers. There are plenty of pubs and restaurants with regional cuisine, but a sausage at the Oberhof shooting range is certainly a must. Those who stay longer and are looking for tour tips or a fuel talk can check in at the Frobelhof (www.froebelhof.de) with Silvana Faccin and Klaus Muller.

House route in the Thuringian Forest

Content of

Hand on heart, many “Wessis” are still having a hard time with the East. For absolutely no reason, because in the Thuringian Forest, for example, there are great motorcycle routes. So get on the iron and burn in a great environment!

PS reader Klaus Muller has a handshake like the proverbial vice. I get to feel it over the welcome beer in the hotel run by his partner Silvana and him in Bad Liebenstein in the Thuringian Forest. During a casual conversation about the process of going out together on one of his house routes the next day, he advertises his territory. Why should you let the police harass you all the time in the Eifel around the Nurburgring when they leave you in peace here in the Thuringian Forest?

The Ducatista has just come out and is true to his word, which made him a “republic refugee” during the GDR era. This year, in addition to his Silvana, he also takes care of his Streetfighter S, the hotel, his company and he plays in several bands. A free spirit who does his thing and does what he enjoys. Many of us former citizens of the West would benefit from such open thinking, especially in relation to motorcycle areas. Or do we want to leave the Thuringian Forest to the few local distillers forever? No, that would be a shame! There is simply too much to offer around Bad Liebenstein. The region is full of curvy stretches in excellent condition that invite you to surf – curve junkies will get their money’s worth here!

6.0 m wide route with 35 curves at an altitude of 260 meters

We take the first perfect road under our wheels less than three kilometers from the hotel. While Silvana has to take care of the guests, Klaus and I plunge into the fun. The tour starts on the L 1027 and is a highlight right away. The country road presents itself as a freshly tarred, flawless, asphalt strip winding up the mountain with a double barrier and transponder loops embedded in the pavement. You read that correctly, transponder loops for timing. The L 1027 is now once again the venue for the previously well-known Glasbach hill climb (www.glasbachrennen.de) and since this year it has been part of the official FIA European Hill Climb Championship. Over five and a half kilometers, the six-meter-wide route through 35 bends climbs 260 meters up the mountain.

Klaus dances his tires warm and then lets the Duc fly on a brisk, clean line. You can tell immediately that he has scrubbed the almost 30,000 kilometers on the Streetfighter speedometer himself. We burn quickly through the country, enjoy the weak traffic in this region and let it run smoothly. We quickly approach Kleinschmalkalden through narrow, almost rugged valleys. This spot wouldn’t be worth mentioning if it weren’t for the largest cowbell in the world parked prominently on the main street. 3.1 meters high and weighing over 900 kilograms, the sheet steel structure is now waiting for a genetically modified cow that can withstand the colossus around its neck.

“Perfect route for Gixxers and street fighters”

Burning in the Thuringian Forest.

With a view of the 916 meter high Inselberg, you continue via Suhl (formerly the location of the Simson works), Frauenwald, Schwarzburg and Konigsee. Sometimes over very narrow, winding paths, sometimes over brisk, long stretches. The mix of Klaus ’Tour is great, perfect for Gixxers and street fighters. In Oberhof we make a short stop at the snack bar right next to the biathlete shooting range and get an original Thuringian bratwurst with potato salad. Not exactly sports food, but all the more delicious. After a short visit to the shooting range in the Rennsteig Arena, we continue rolling past the ski jump at Haselbach and back towards Bad Liebenstein. The mountain race downhill, i.e. against the direction of the race, we got back to the Frobelhof far too quickly, where Silvana is already waiting for us with a cold drink and a hearty snack.

If you want to spend a motorcycle weekend in a new area, you are welcome to contact our PS reader. Even if the guests do not stay in their nice hostel, Silvana and Klaus will be happy to provide some attractive route tips for their region. It will certainly be more relaxed with a drink in the Frobelhof’s dining room.
