The abbreviation “F.” – at first it probably stood for “Fairing”, so disguise. Because Honda brought the Honda decorated with more plastic CBF 1000 F (model code SC64) in 2010 not instead of, but as a supplement to the CBF 1000 (type code SC58), which has been built since 2006. In the following year 2011, however, the old CBF dropped out of the program and has been able to do so since then “F.” also as “continuation” be interpreted. At least until 2016, when the 1000 F also tumbled out of the Honda model range in the course of Euro 4. There has been a gap there since then.

Because this all-rounder, high-torque, agile and absolutely suitable for touring, was always one of the most sociable thousands. Was? No is! Because there are enough double-Fs on the used market, the predecessor even in large numbers. And both make excellent used cars. Even if terms like people’s motorcycle or bread-and-butter bike always have a stale aftertaste – in the end they are exactly that: uncomplicated companions for all situations and suitable for all driver ergonomics. The whole thing paired with those qualities that are typically ascribed to a Honda, in other words: It is technically mature and always reliable even with high mileage.

The CBF 1000 F pleases with a visibly more modern cockpit than its predecessor, the tachometer remained analog.

This is especially true for the Honda CBF 1000 F, but also for the CBF 1000 after replacing the insufficiently cooled alternator. Other differences? The F looks cooler because of the more dynamic cladding, but has to do without the second rear silencer. Thanks to an aluminum frame instead of a steel frame, it loses eight kilos, with its fuel capacity increased by one liter, it is more frugal – with nine additional horses that the domesticated Fireblade engine can now lift. Meanwhile, the driving itself doesn’t differ too much. The chassis of the F is overall firmer and therefore a little better tuned, both 1000s are extremely handy thanks to the narrow 160mm rear tire. In this respect: old SC58 or newer SC64? Ultimately, a question of taste and price – both are extremely sensible motorcycles.

Facelift

2006: Introduction of the Honda CBF 1000 (SC58) with 98 hp. In total, it had sold more than 13,000 times in Germany before it left the Honda model range. It was offered in black, white, silver, red, orange, green and blue, although the colored variants are rare. The SC58 was initially priced at 7,990 euros, later at 9,990 euros.

2010: Last model year of the Honda CBF 1000 and also the first sales year of the Honda CBF 1000 F (SC64). The main differences are the more generous plastic cladding and the 107 hp more powerful engine. Price of the new: 10,890 euros.

2016: Last model year of the Honda CBF 1000 F due to the Euro 4 conversion. Over the years the Honda has not received any technical updates, only the color variants have changed from year to year. In total, the CBF 1000 F was approved a good 3,300 times in Germany.

Market situation

Honda CBF 1000 F and Honda CBF 1000 can be found in sufficient numbers on the used market. The F, which is available from 5,300 euros, is a bit more expensive; bargain hunters choose the predecessor.

MOTORCYCLE: Let’s be honest, a thousand with 160 mm rear tires: laughing stock in front of the ice cream parlor or handling wonder in the cornering area?

Udo Kutscher: That’s right, our customers don’t rate the narrow rear wheel as particularly beautiful. But in terms of handling, they find the motorcycle perfect, and the 160 rear tire takes care of that too. So Honda did everything right with the narrow tire.

MOTORCYCLE: How popular are the two CBFs as used ones? And who will buy them?

Udo Kutscher: The Honda CBF, and I don’t make any distinction between the SC58 and SC64, is currently my best-selling used vehicle. The age of the interested parties ranges from 35 up to 70 years. For even younger people, however, it is less interesting, for them it is not sporty enough and in terms of appearance somehow too …

MOTORCYCLE: … unadventurous?

Udo Kutscher: Yes. The Honda CBF 1000 is actually a staid vehicle. But with a top performance.

MOTORCYCLE: Who is considering the high-performance Biedermeier as a future motorcycle??

Udo Kutscher: Returners and climbers, newcomers less. Frequently there are interested parties who used to drive a CBF 600 and now want a little more displacement, performance and sovereignty. On the other hand, there are also people who want to come back in after a long motorcycle break, but don’t want to start too small. The motorcycle is ideal for this. Because it is a thousand and has a lot of performance, but also forgives a lot.

MOTORCYCLE: Which of the two would you recommend?

Udo Kutscher: In terms of optics, I would take the SC58, the older one. This is mainly due to the double exhaust. In terms of performance, my choice would clearly be the Honda CBF 1000 F..

MOTORCYCLE: What mileage are then harmless with the Honda CBF 1000?

Udo Kutscher: You’re not really asking that, are you ?! This is a Honda! In my opinion, the motorcycle has a life expectancy of around 500,000 kilometers!

MOTORCYCLE: Is there anything else you want to tell us??

Udo Kutscher: I have one wish: that Honda will reissue such a vehicle. An all-rounder suitable for touring, four-cylinder, maybe even with a few more cubic meters. We are currently missing that in our portfolio.
