The Honda Crossrunner is a motorcycle with a heart – a great V4 with special valve control beats in it. But not exactly a motorcycle for the heart – the 800 is a fun bike, travel companion and everyday companion, but it is only a compromise. Albeit a successful one.

Vau-four. That should be the only reason you got a Honda Crossrunner buys? In any case, Honda itself tries to some extent to advertise the motorcycle as an “upper middle class adventure sports tourer” with a “thrilling riding experience” in order to distract from its origins. Because actually the 800 is nothing more than a higher VFR. Especially since cross-references to the sports tourer veteran are not spared. It’s great, because this has been a famous motorcycle with various further developed types since the 1980s and has above all proven to be extremely durable.

The Honda Crossrunner offers similar qualities, cost a ridiculous 10,790 euros on its debut in 2011 and was usually only sold for four-digit amounts in reality. The VFR cost almost 2000 euros more! Nevertheless, only a few buyers were convinced by the overall concept with wide tubular handlebars and an upright sitting posture, although the 102 hp four-cylinder engine has hardly any weaknesses apart from a too long gear ratio and therefore rather moderate pulling power. In 2013 there was a break in construction, but also the new service in 2015 with extensive renovation (now 106 hp and many changes, see model upgrade) could not ignite properly. Too bad. But makes them a bargain tip when you buy them second-hand – not just for V4 fans.

The engine is extremely durable, but watch out for fall marks and the condition of wearing parts.
You don’t need to worry about the ultra-durable V4 engine of the Honda Crossrunner, which with proper maintenance can easily handle mileage well in excess of 100,000 kilometers. Nevertheless, you shouldn’t do without a test drive and, especially for private sellers, have the complete service booklet shown to you. Also watch out for signs of falling and check wear parts such as tires or brakes. A rather expensive inspection is the 24,000 series, which sometimes costs a good 500 euros if the engine valves need to be checked.
Since the Honda Crossrunner is sometimes used all year round as an everyday machine, check the maintenance condition and watch out for salt on light metal surfaces! Popular as (original) accessories, but hardly promotes sales individually: main stand, high windshield, heated grips. Rather price-increasing: case and topcase in the vehicle color and high-quality retrofit silencers with EC type approval.

Well equipped for tours and with a maximum of 20,000 kilometers for less than 6500 euros – then the Crossrunner falls into the prey of clever buyers.
There is an overwhelming number of dealer offers on the Internet marketplaces. A large part of it, however, are many new vehicles and daily registrations from the year of construction 2013, which perish in the show rooms. Some of these grandfather clocks are sold at dumping prices well below 9,000 euros. No wonder, because the new Honda Crossrunner, built in 2015, is offered with a homeopathically low mileage or completely virgin for less than 11,000 euros. That is bad for all high-priced “real” used vehicles with mileage of over 1000 kilometers. Even well-cared for and well-maintained second-hand machines are difficult to sell for over 8,000 euros.
Around a third of the used offers are of a private nature. These are attractive when the offer includes many accessory extras at a good price. Well equipped for tours and with a maximum of 20,000 kilometers for less than 6500 euros – then the Honda Crossrunner falls into the prey pattern of clever buyers looking for a solid sports touring machine with which one would like to enter into a multi-year liaison. Highly attractive offers around 5000 euros are still very few and far between due to the relatively young age.

2011 Launch of the Honda Crossrunner, type RC60, based on the Honda VFR model. Main differences to the VFR: longer spring travel (165/145 instead of 109/120 mm), higher positioned and wider tubular instead of clip-on handlebars, cladding, coordination of the valve control system VTEC (speed-dependent switching from two to four-valve operation), individual exhaust. Power: 102 hp. Weight: 239 kg. Price: 10,790 euros.
2012 New special color: matt silver with a camouflage look. Price unchanged.
2014 Honda Crossrunner in Germany no longer in the range, but remainder from dealers (mostly with big discounts) on sale. List price unchanged.
2015 Model name VFR 800 X Crossrunner, new type: RC80. New cladding design, modified ergonomics. Other innovations: traction control and heated grips as standard, power increased to 106 hp, cooler placed in the middle instead of to the side of the engine, revised VTEC set-up, exhaust system and wheels from VFR 800 F, stiffer swing arm (1.2 kg lighter), adjustable seat height, two-part seat bench , Rear frame made of aluminum instead of steel, handlebars wider and higher, flatter steering head angle (63.4 degrees), longer caster and wheelbase, 25 mm more ground clearance, LED lights, instruments easier to read and with gear indicator, no combination brake. Colors: red, black, white. Price: 12,195 euros.
