Super slurry pump

Honda has been building motorcycles for almost 70 years. 40 years ago the Japanese surprised with the water-cooled V2 cardan machine CX 500. Couldn’t the concept be resurrected? Just stronger, nicer and faster? Possibly as a Honda CX 1200 compressor?

They disappeared all too quickly, the water-cooled V2 Hondas with their characteristic transverse cylinders. Hitting the streets in 1978, it wasn’t just Rotger Feldmann who caused a stir with his cult comic “Werner” for a lot of ridicule in biker circles, the CX was used by Werner as a slurry pump. Their rather controversial design also made life difficult for the Honda. The bulging bench, an unsightly speedometer lamp unit and a sloping line did not make it appear sporty. Technically, she was quite successful. The engine was extremely robust, despite the pushrod valve train, more revving than any Guzzi drive, the chassis was very comfortable. Thanks to the cardan drive, the CX was easy to maintain, making it an ideal travel machine. Nevertheless, it was over again in the mid-80s.

Slurry pump will not be forgotten

Despite the popular chopper version CX 500 C, the powerful CX 500 Turbo and the subsequent 650s with a much more pleasing design, Honda had nothing more in mind with the entire series. They were already working on V2 engines with a 52 degree cylinder angle, overhead camshafts and transverse crankshafts, which were then successfully installed in the VT 500 E, Transalp and Africa Twin for many years and were even more robust than the CX engines. For MOTORRAD, however, the slurry pump will not be forgotten. And for the 70-year motorcycle anniversary, we’re giving Honda the idea of a super slurry pump: a CX 1200 compressor, with a much more sporty design, but unique in its conception and certainly worth a few thought games.

1983 – Honda CX 650 Turbo: First as a 500, 82 hp, the later 650 delivered up to 100 hp.

V2 engines with cylinders perpendicular to the direction of travel are only available from Moto Guzzi. But the Italians somehow forgot how to build new motorcycles and are now bobbing around a bit without a drive – a perfect niche for our 1200s. Thanks to the pushrod valve train with a central, half-height camshaft, the four-valve engine would not be as bulky as, for example, the current boxers from BMW, but the naturally aspirated version would still be good for 120 hp. The arrangement of the clutch, gearbox and cardan shaft would be perfectly logical, because everything would turn in a longitudinal direction without any deflection. In order to breathe additional power and torque into the V2, it needs to be charged. Instead of using a turbocharger that was difficult to control, as in earlier times, MOTORRAD proposes a mechanically driven compressor. Even at low engine speeds, this delivers enough boost pressure to turn the CX into a 150 hp steam hammer. This means that the super liquid manure pump would be at least as high as the next BMW boxer generation, if not even higher.

Would Honda ever build a motorcycle like this??

In order to offer an adequate environment for the decent range of services, we would position the CX 1200 Kompressor in a much sportier way than the original series ever was. With a larger and more effective handlebar cover, a low but sturdy aluminum bridge frame and a line sloping forward, it would radiate a completely different dynamic even when standing still. And with their two spring struts on the rear wheel swing arm, they also carry that dash of retro style that makes biker hearts weak these days. This would also be underlined by the one-man hump shaped in the traditional English style, which would of course be provided with a removable pillion seat cover.

The new CX would suck in cheekily next to the fork tubes. If so, then already. And the cylinder heads would also be turned slightly again. This trick, with which Honda caused a sensation as early as 1978, not only looks dynamic, it also allows better knee grip and a straighter flow through the heads. And just like back then, the drive would again be predestined for a modular system – everything is possible with it, from touring bikes to muscle bikes. Would Honda ever build a motorcycle like this? Do you dare? Never say Never. After all, the world’s largest two-wheeler manufacturer is building a new Gold Wing, a new Monkey and also a new Super Cub. All icons from the early days, and Honda is proud of these models today. Why shouldn’t you be proud of your CX at last??
