Assistance systems are also gaining ground in the two-wheeler segment. A patent from Honda has now emerged that deals with an autopilot.

The first series-produced motorcycles with radar systems are currently entering the market. BMW equips the new R 1250 RT with it, Ducati equips the new Multistrada V4 with it. The Bosch systems installed there use the radar for adaptive cruise control. It automatically monitors the distance to the vehicle in front and accelerates or brakes independently in order to maintain a suitable distance.

Of course, the radar technology can also be used for other usage scenarios. For example a kind of autopilot. In the Honda patent specification, traffic is monitored by radar – as an alternative, camera surveillance is also conceivable. An intelligent cruise control function is also provided here. Honda goes one step further and integrates an evasive and lane change assistant.

A servomotor under the steering head is connected to the steering stem via a chain drive. If an obstacle is detected in the lane, a steering impulse is given and the obstacle is bypassed. It is also possible to change lanes and, in the distant future, even fully autonomous driving functions. It is unlikely that such will be sought.

BMW already had one of them that something like this is possible autonomously driving prototype shown.
