The motorcycle manufacturer Honda has patented a system in the USA in which an electric motorcycle works together with a drone.

The patent with the number US 2021/0047030 A1 from February 18, 2021 actually only deals with drones, but the secondary aspects make the patent specification really interesting.

But first back to the drone. It is purely electrically powered, has four rotors and is parked on the rear of the motorcycle when it is idle. The pillion seat is thus occupied. If the drone is started, it will stretch immediately after take-off. The flight stability increases with the larger basic shape. If the drone returns to its landing pad at the stern, it will shrink again before landing.

The drone can also dispose of unwanted waste heat.

In the patent specification, the drone is combined with a sports motorcycle with – please note – an electric drive. In the parked position, the drone acts as a suction fan that removes hot air from the battery and the electric motor through exhaust ducts.

Drone supports assistance systems

Let’s let the drone take off again. In the air it can function as a scout networked with the base vehicle, delivering hazards or new route options and preconfiguring the vehicle’s own electronic systems accordingly. Networked with the cloud or other vehicles, the drone can also pass on information and warnings to other road users or receive them from them.

If we spin this idea a few steps further, it will quickly turn into a snap idea. Should every vehicle carry a drone in the airspace above it, the same traffic chaos in the air as on the road below would soon arise. Therefore, as with many patents, the comment: not everything that is patented is also built. In addition, the focus of this patent application is on the variable-size drone.

Conclusion

A drone as a dinghy for a ground-based vehicle is not a new idea. The possibilities of such a combination are manifold, but the concept does not seem to have been thought through to the end.
