IDM 2019 in Assen, the Netherlands

IDM in Assen from September 6th to 8th, 2019
Dutch want to use home advantage

This coming weekend, the IDM 2019 will hit the home straight: On the TT Circuit in Assen, the Netherlands, the title question could be clarified early in some classes – as far as the theory goes. What the practice looks like will be shown on site from September 6th to 8th, 2019.

On the 4.555 kilometer long TT Circuit with its slightly elevated corners, an annual motorcycle world championship has been held for exactly 70 years. The traditional race track in the north of Holland has also become an integral part of the IDM calendar. The course for the final three weeks later in Hockenheim will be set here. The champions of the International German Motorcycle Championship (IDM) organized by Motor Presse Stuttgart will be crowned there.

IDM Superbike 1000

The fight for the title in the IDM Superbike 1000 has come to a head. Defending champion Ilya Mikhalchik has regained the lead in the premier class and relegated his alpha Racing Van Zon BMW team-mate Julian Puffe to second place in the duel at the top. At the previous IDM run in Most, the Ukrainian turned his nine-point deficit into a 41-point advantage over the weekend. Will Puffe manage to turn the tables again? The 23-year-old Schleizer has another problem. Pepijn Bijsterbosch from the Netherlands, who also drives a BMW, is lurking behind him. The local hero starts 40 points behind the German. But the exciting races in Most showed what can happen. So Puffe has to be very careful that he leaves his brand colleagues behind.

The first IDM appearance by Bastien Mackels from Belgium this season also promises excitement. The 2018 IDM Superbike 1000 runner-up makes his debut in the premier class with the new BMW S1000 RR. The Wilbers BMW crew worked on the motorcycle for three months. “We now also have the software with which the engine brake and traction control can be coordinated,” says team boss Benny Wilbers. Mackels won the 6-hour race in Spa with the new S 1000 RR, “and that is just as possible at the IDM in Assen,” he thinks aloud.

Premier class: IDM Superbike 1000.

The IDM Superbike 1000 is about brand prestige. The sophisticated motorcycles from BMW, Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha have plenty of 200 hp and can go over 300 km / h. Each brand has placed at least one driver in the top ten overall. Alessandro Polita (Honda) is fourth overall, Erwan Nigon (Kawasaki) fifth, Marc Moser (Yamaha) sixth and Toni Finsterbusch (Suzuki) eighth in the championship. Even with the battles for these positions, it will remain exciting until the season finale.

IDM Supersport 600

In the IDM Supersport 600, the tried and tested climbing class, Yamaha figurehead Max Enderlein could be crowned champion prematurely. He travels to Assen with a whopping 71 championship points ahead of overall runner-up Martin Vugrinec. But Enderlein doesn’t want to hear anything about a successful title defense. Why? A year ago he broke his collarbone in Assen with the same prospects in free practice and was only able to win the title on the last groove in a dramatic final in Hockenheim.

Stefan Strohlein, who also rides a Yamaha, doesn’t want to let anything burn. He leads the DMSB Superstock 600 Cup by 60 points. In this one, not as much may be changed on the motorcycles as in the IDM Supersport 600, but both race in the same field with separate valuation. In Assen, the spectators expect gripping decisions at the highest sporting level.

IDM Supersport 300

The fight in the IDM Supersport 300, the junior class in Germany’s highest series in motorcycle road racing, has meanwhile advanced to a close exchange of blows between the European racing talent. With Angelo Licciardi (Kawasaki) a Belgian leads the overall standings. He is being chased by three Dutch riders who have high hopes for the home race in Assen: Rick Dunnik (Yamaha), Colin Velthuizen (Yamaha) and Ruben Bijman (Kawasaki). All can still become masters.

The IDM Supersport 300 is characterized by tight slipstream battles. At the beginning of a race, it is difficult to predict the outcome. The decision about victory and defeat is usually only made in the last corner. You can always count on David Kuban (KTM) from the Czech Republic and the German Toni Erhard (KTM), even if their own title chances are only slim. For the defending champion Erhard it’s only about individual successes. But this way the 18-year-old from Schwarzenberg in the Ore Mountains could steal valuable points from the championship favorites.

IDM sidecar

The IDM Sidecar, in which Tim Reeves, as seven-time world champion, is the measure of all things, is also an integral part of the IDM. The Briton is so far unbeaten in his 600 cc team. With a lead of 99 points and 100 points still to be awarded, the title can normally no longer be taken from him.

It looks completely different in the IDM sidecar rating for the 1000 cc teams. Mike Roscher / Anna Burkard (LCR BMW) have held the overall lead here since Most. The German-Swiss combination is now trying to keep the dethroned front runners Andres Nussbaum / Manuel Hirschi (LCR Yamaha) behind.

The IDM classes are framed by the races of the BMW Motorrad BoxerCup, the Twin Cup and the Suzuki GSX-R 1000 Cup. Public press conferences, access to the paddock and the pit walk make the IDM a hands-on series even at the penultimate season appearance in Assen.
