Family festival in Thuringia
Races in seven classes, autograph sessions, public press conferences, test drives with motorcycles from five manufacturers, a dealer mile and, above all, brilliant weather: this is how the International German Motorcycle Championship presented itself from July 28th to 30th, 2017 at the Schleizer Dreieck. Germany’s highest road racing series drew 28,500 spectators to the oldest natural racing track in the republic.

The parking lot in front of the paddock filled rapidly in the early morning hours of race Sunday. The cars lined up as far as Oberbohmsdorf. Schleiz is worth the trip, especially when the IDM is running. The natural race track is loved by drivers and fans alike.

“I only say three words: Schleiz is awesome!” The two-time German Superbike champion Markus Reiterberger called to the fans over the microphone at the award ceremony. As expected, the 23-year-old BMW driver from Bavaria won both Superbike 1000 races again this time. He holds the lap record of 1: 24.165 minutes on the unconventional route. But Reiterberger has no choice but to win everywhere. Because he is hoping for a comeback in the Superbike World Championship.
Yamaha rider Florian Alt was the only rider to break into the mighty BMW phalanx at the top in Schleiz. The man from Gummersbach finished second in the first run, which gave him the satisfaction of having made further progress with the tires. The Yamaha factory team is one of the few to rely on the Dunlop brand. Most of the teams roll on Pirelli tires.

Five brands are fighting for the title in the IDM Superbike 1000: BMW, Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha. In each of the races, at least one of them made it into the top ten. Superbike 1000 newcomer Lucy Glockner rescued Kawasaki from the crisis. The fast lady scored 16 points in one fell swoop on the ZX-10 R. So now Kawasaki is also part of the music.

In the Supersport 600 class, victories in both races went to Thomas Gradinger from Austria. The Yamaha rider was able to create a small cushion of points as the leader in the championship standings. He came to Schleiz tied with his brand colleague Kevin Wahr from Nagold, who saw his defeat coming sooner. “”At the moment I cannot accelerate out of the corners with the motorcycle as I would like.” True, who came third twice, also had to give way to Max Enderlein from Saxony in both races.
Local hero and ex-IDM player Thomas Walther from the host MSC Schleizer Dreieck, who competed as a guest, was once fifth and once tenth on his Yamaha. In the IDM Supersport 300, the junior class in the program, only a small field took to the track in the absence of the Dutch, who otherwise strengthen the field. This, however, provided splendid entertainment. The first run was surprisingly won by Troy Beinlich from nearby Pobneck. Most recently in Zolder he was not allowed to start because at the age of 14 he was too young for the Belgian regulations. Now he set the pace for Freudenberg teammates Max Kappler and Jan-Ole Jahnig. The first five drivers were only 0.6 seconds apart. There was tension.
In the end there were still only half points because the race was stopped prematurely. Kappler and Jahnig had fallen. Because the previous round was counted, they should have been on the podium for the award ceremony, but the ceremony was canceled. Both had to go to a medical check-up. Both got off lightly. Kappler stayed
for further observation in the hospital, but Jahnig was back for the second race and was third behind Tim Georgi and Troy Beinlich.

In the IDM Sidecar, the duo Markus Schlosser / Thomas Hofer from Switzerland once again announced their title ambitions with another victory. There was a relief from Josef Sattler / Uwe Neubert. The Germans were finally able to get a taste of leadership again in Schleiz, even if it was only for two laps. But they were on the third podium after both races. The defending champions Bennie Streuer / Gerard Daalhuizen from the Netherlands also won a victory.

The legendary Yamaha R6 Dunlop Cup, the Twin 700 Cup and the Suzuki GSX-R 1000 Cup rounded off the racing program on the Schleizer Dreieck. “We are thrilled by the large number of spectators who came to the track”, said Henning Putzke. The head of BMW Motorrad Germany is also the spokesperson for the working group “Motorsport” under the umbrella of the Motorcycle Industry Association (IVM), which acts as the promoter of the IDM. “We are working on making the series even more attractive for everyone involved.”
The fans also got their money’s worth away from the racetrack. BMW, Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha offered interested bikers test drives with motorcycles from the current range of models. On Saturday the race went off at the race party with a driver presentation at Buchhubel. Thanks to the open paddock, the public press conferences or the autograph sessions, the spectators got up close to the heroes of the racetrack.
The Schleizer Dreieck is not a retort course, but a natural race track with a heavy tendency towards nostalgia. That also gives it its very own charm. But a timely change is necessary. The route safety has already been further expanded. Technical issues such as electrical engineering and sanitary facilities are to follow. Schleizer Dreieck GmbH wants to fundamentally improve the infrastructure. Last but not least, so that the IDM is back in the small district town in Thuringia. It is the annual highlight in the route calendar.
