The responsible authorities have the route operator as well as Motor Presse Stuttgart as promoter and organizer of the IDM “green light” signaled for the event, even if a strict hygiene concept is essential due to the current corona wave and spectators are not allowed.

“After the first two IDM events had to be canceled due to the Covid-19 developments, we can now see light at the end of the tunnel”, says Normann Broy. The IDM series manager hopes the situation will continue, “but Oschersleben is not in danger today. The ADAC GT Masters will be held a week before us and there is currently no reason why we shouldn’t drive after that.”

Drivers from 17 nations at the start

Broy’s hopes of subsequently being able to pull through the majority of the IDM are based on the progress of the vaccination campaign in the population and falling incidence figures. “When the virus is under control, we can go back to normal. Not only the drivers and teams are hot for the races, but also the fans and organizers. Everyone is in wait, because the IDM is known for the fact that it really gets going on the track. We have drivers from a total of 17 nations at the start.”

Starting field IDM Superbike 1000

The IDM Superbike 1000 is the premier class of the championship. A total of 24 drivers from 14 countries fight for the title. Ten drivers are given a chance to win the individual races. The first corner will already play a major role for the top drivers on BMW, Honda, Kawasaki and Yamaha. Last year Jonas Folger took the title in the premier class on the over 200 hp Yamaha. The Bavarian is now fighting for points in the Superbike World Championship. BMW wants to try to get the IDM title back into its own camp and is betting on the already two-time champion Ilya Mikhalchik from Ukraine. The German motorcycle manufacturer has peppered its superbike with even more technical details than before. The M 1000 RR is the most powerful sports motorcycle in BMW company history and has been upgraded again for the IDM Superbike 1000. For the first time this season, Oschersleben will show where the four brands really stand.

“All drivers, teams, partners and of course we as organizers are hot for the season opener”, says series manager Normann Broy. “In the IDM, we have more fields of participants than we have had for a long time. That promises exciting decisions in all races as well as in the championships as a whole. The fact that the season is finally starting inspires us all.”

Starting field IDM Supersport 600

Top-class motorcycle racing is also offered in the IDM Supersport 600. In the medium displacement class, slicks can now be used instead of the previously profiled tires. The Yamaha YZF-R6 is the most popular motorcycle, but Luca Grunwald, a Kawasaki rider, won the title in 2020. Both brands will also be producing heavy calibers in 2021 and, like Dino Iozzo, even drivers from South Africa will be arriving. In the field of super athletes, as recently, the Superstock pilots appear again, which are rated separately.

Their motorcycles are closer to series production and the smaller group is not fighting for the IDM title, but for a cup. How do you recognize them? The Superstock 600 Cup riders have start number boards with white numbers on a blue background. The opposite is true for the IDM Supersport 600 pilots.

IDM Supersport 300 starting field

The IDM Supersport 300 is no less exciting. The champions of the past three years will meet with defending champions Lennox Lehmann, Angelo Licciardi and Toni Erhard. Motorcycles from Kawasaki, KTM and Yamaha have more than 50 hp. The junior class has established itself as preparation for the leap to the top, is extremely popular and, according to the FIM regulations, is open to teenagers aged 13 and over. As in the World Cup, slicks are driven by IDM tire outfitter PIRELLI. From this season onwards, the motorcycles will for the first time be equipped with the same standardized electronics as in the world championship.

The Northern Talent Cup, the Pro Superstock Cup and the Twin Cup set up.

“For all fans who are not allowed to be on site due to the corona pandemic, the races will be delivered to their homes, in Livestream“, says Bert Brandenburg, Head of Events at Motor Presse Stuttgart.
