The Institute for Two-Wheeler Safety (IFZ) has the final report on the study “Motorcycle safety in Germany” presented. The result: safety is the top priority for motorcyclists.

At the IFZ study “Motorcycle safety in Germany: attitudes and behaviors with a special focus on driver assistance systems on motorcycles” Around 4,000 motorcyclists took part. The evaluation of the extensive questionnaire clearly shows that motorcyclists say they try to be as safe as possible. The motorcyclists surveyed also agree on the safety-enhancing potential of electronic driver assistance systems.

According to the results of the study, the safety awareness of motorcyclists not only remains theory, it also serves as a guideline for their own behavior. For example, the use of all motorcycle clothing is largely a given, as is the regular safety check of your own two-wheeler.

The vast majority of respondents agree on the safety-enhancing potential of assistance systems. Even more: over 60 percent of motorcyclists are of the opinion that systems such as ABS or traction control will further help reduce the number of motorcycle accidents. But many also draw very practical conclusions from this: 53 percent of those questioned expressly stated that the safety-relevant aspects had a large to very large influence on their motorcycle choice. The security components offered are therefore deliberately included in the purchase decision. The study also does away with a cliche, namely whether the electronic helpers do not encourage a risky driving style. Straight to the subject “Risk compensation” when addressed, only 13 percent see themselves tempted to adopt a risky driving style because of the existing assistance systems.

Assistance systems make motorcycling safer.

Around 70 percent of motorcyclists feel more comfortable with assistance from assistance systems. 80 percent stated that they are familiar with the assistants built into their own motorcycle and that they are able to operate them. That leaves 20 percent who have some catching up to do on these points.

Conclusion

More and more assistance systems make motorcycling safer and safer. Safety clothing, which is getting better and better, also plays its part. However, the most important actuator for more safety is still in the throttle hand.
