Indian Custom Bike Competition 2018

The finalists of "The Wrench"

Indian has announced a custom bike competition for non-professionals in the USA, in which an Indian Scout Bobber has to be converted. The three finalists of "The Wrench" firmly.

Indian Motorcycle had called on all non-professional mechanics to design their dream custom bike based on one I.ndian Scout Bobber. From the more than 100 drafts received, 12 were pre-selected by an expert jury, which were then reduced to three by the fans through an online vote. The submitters of the winning designs were each provided with a brand new Indian Scout Bobber as well as a budget of 10,000 dollars and a time limit of three months – then it went to work. Now the three finalists have implemented their designs in a true custom bike and are thus facing the public vote. We introduce the three finalists.

From cruiser to cafe racer

Indian Motorcycle

Indian Scout Bobber conversion by PJ Grakauskas.

When 39-year-old PJ Grakauskas from Ohio is not working for the US Department of Labor, he is passionate about working on motorcycles. There are already several Cafe Racers in his fleet. The Indian Scout Bobber, on the other hand, was new territory for him, but not a hindrance. So, of course, he turned the cruiser into a cafe racer with a short rear end and hand-made full fairing. Other features include the fork from a Suzuki GSX-R, which, together with new triple clamps, trims the geometry for more driving dynamics.

18-inch wire-spoke wheels offer space for Pirelli sports tires. Beringer stoppers on both wheels provide braking power. The rear swing arm is supported on Ohlins stereo dampers. For a sportier seating position, steering stubs have been moved under the upper triple clamp, the newly shaped, slim tank relies on knee recesses and the leather bench sits on a shortened hump. The V2 was tuned to the Supertrapp racing exhaust with a Power Commander.

The renovation by PJ Grakauskas is rounded off by a special paint finish in black / gold and lights converted to LED technology.

Real dragster

Indian Motorcycle

The NASA man delivers a dragster design.

The Indian by customizer Alfredo Juarez is long, flat and stretched. The 34-year-old from New Mexico, who has been working on motorcycles since he was 12, earns his bread as an engineer at the NASA space agency. His Indian Scout Bobber design is based on a rigid frame look. The front wheel is guided by a tubular fork according to the Hossack principle, the rear is actually unsprung. A matt green drop tank corresponds with copper sheets in the frame triangles and on the minimalist lamp cover. The driver’s seat is also little more than a sturdy sheet metal. The wire spoke wheels are 19 inches in diameter, the Indian V2 exhales laterally through the silencerless manifold pipes.

Classic 80s chopper

Indian Motorcycle

Newman took chopper from the 70s and 80s as a model.

Third in the group of finalists is Christian Newman, a 36-year-old mining engineer from New York. In his design he relies on classic chopper lines, as they were in the 70s and 80s: drop tank, stepped bench with sissy bar, extremely fat rear tires on a 15-inch rim, a filigree fork with an equally filigree 23-inch Front wheel. Newman made all the conversion parts such as fenders, swingarms, tanks, etc. himself. The handlebars stretch extremely high, the instruments sit in the middle of the tank. The conversion is rounded off by an effect paint in blue / silver.

You can vote on the three finalists on the Indian website until August 16, 2018. The winner, who will receive 10,000 dollars in prize money and a publication in a well-known custom bike magazine, will be announced on August 21.
