MOTORCYCLE: Ducati sees itself as a manufacturer of sporty, high-tech machines. The Scrambler series was therefore outsourced by name and does not operate under the Ducati label. Then why does a cruiser appear under the Ducati name??

Gherardi: Because they Ducati XDiavel represents the interpretation of a cruiser from the point of view of Ducati. It embodies the values ​​that define Ducati. It is the lightest, the handiest and most technically advanced machine in the cruiser segment.

MOTORCYCLE: Do you really think there is a demand for a Ducati cruiser??

Gherardi: Of course, otherwise we wouldn’t have started the project at all. The success of the Diavel justifies this assessment. We have sold 18,000 Diavel since the model was launched five years ago.

MOTORCYCLE: There is no risk that the new Ducati XDiavel the Diavel cannibalized in terms of sales?

Gherardi: We will of course monitor developments closely. But the XDiavel should appeal to a new target group that cruiser fans.

MOTORCYCLE: The look of the XDiavel was influenced by the Ducati design department in California. Such a design cannot come about in Europe?

Gherardi: I have to strongly disagree. Ducati does not have a design office in the USA. It is true that our designers were inspired by a trip to California in the design center of our parent company Audi. It was there, for example, that the idea for the design of the wheels of the S-model and the exhaust came about.

MOTORCYCLE: The American cult designer Roland Sands is also involved in the XDiavel project. At the same time, however, he is involved in the development of other manufacturers, for example BMW. Does that make sense from a Ducati point of view?

Gherardi: Sands is only working on the accessories line. The design of the XDiavel was developed entirely by Ducati employees.

MOTORCYCLE: The Ducati XDiavel was developed with the main focus on the American market, or?

Gherardi: Sure, but the US is not the only focus. We believe that Germany could become the second largest market for the Ducati XDiavel. The Diavel has already sold well in Germany. The XDiavel could build on this success. We will build a total of 7,000 units this year.

MOTORCYCLE: The Scrambler and the two Diavel models raise concerns that Ducati will no longer focus its development on sporty machines.

Gherardi: Sports bikes and racing are part of our DNA and continue to be at the center of our work. But we are also growing by broadening our range of models. But new developments also remain true to our basic values: state-of-the-art technology, performance and attractive design. The Ducati XDiavel is a good example of this.
