Maffay’s 23rd studio album “Wenndas So ist” landed – like 15 albums
before – on first place in the German charts. The rockiest
Album has long been offered in the “standard version” with twelve tracks. Even better: on 10.10. “If that’s the case – LIVE” appears, among other things, in a Premium Edition with lots of bonus material.

No press officer, no manager, no bodyguards

New album, new tour – these would be good reasons for many musicians to conduct an interview on the subject of a new album / new tour. Peter Maffay prefers to talk about motorcycles.

No press spokesman, no manager, there are no bodyguards either, and he thinks that we-would-like-to-have-your-questions-in-advance, which is quite common in the A-celebrity league, is silly. Peter Maffay, who celebrated his 65th birthday a few days earlier and makes every normally trained 40-year-old green with envy, is pretty much the easiest and most attentive interlocutor a journalist could ask for on the terrace of his finca on Mallorca.

When was the last time you rode a motorcycle??
Last night with my little one on the pillion, down to the village.

How many motorcycles do you actually have?
One piece. An almost 15 year old Harley Softail that the guys from Harley Hamburg built for me for the 30th anniversary on the stage. My wife Tania stole the second Harley from me as part of a bet – and is not allowed to drive it because she does not yet have a motorcycle license …

Don’t feel like buying a new machine?
Not at the moment. But the Harley is also peeled out of the egg. I like it anyway, my vehicles (editor’s note: Maffay also has a well-stocked collection of classic cars, including various 911 Porsches) must look like they were in the shop.

You clean yourself?
Necessarily! Cleaning is touching, caressing – I’m really pedantic about that.

Possibly with a toothbrush?
Even. For me, cleaning is relaxing. An hour, two or more. Until the thing is clean.

The ultimate care tip for readers?
Don’t leave it outside in the rain any longer. And if it rained, get rid of it immediately.

You are actually an instant cleaner?
I once screwed up a beautiful Heritage because I left it outside for a week here in Mallorca. We then got this south wind, which brings sand from the Sahara, and it settled on the chrome. After three days the machine had pimples all over and the chrome was in the bucket.

Something like that kills you?
I was totally annoyed. It would have been a no-brainer to get that thing in and dry it off.

You haven’t always been a Harley rider and cleaner. How did your motorcycle career start??
One of the first bikes I sat on when I was young was a 175 CZ. There is a picture of evidence that was taken in front of our house at Kirchengasse 5 in Kronstadt.

Who infected you with the motorcycle bacillus??
My father. He was a pilot when he was young and still flew when he was old. Cars, motorcycles and everything with engines has always been fascinating to him – and he transferred that to me. With one crucial difference: he knows how to take an engine apart and reassemble it. And not me.

Have you not developed a screwdriver ambition in the meantime??
I prefer to use the little time I have for driving.

How did your father get you on a motorcycle in concrete terms??
You really shouldn’t say that out loud: through a lot of nonsense that he did to me. I still remember a tour on a 500cc two-cylinder DKW with a sidecar. The traffic on Romanian roads was more than manageable at that time. My father was driving, I was sitting behind it, and suddenly he asked: “Well, you want to try it?” We then switched while driving. My mother scolded and scolded in the sidecar, but we did it anyway, and in the end I was in the front, my father in the back, and for the first time in my life I drove straight ahead and with a sidecar. I was 12 or 13 years old then.

Then when did your official career in road traffic begin??
At the age of 18 and the car and motorcycle driving license, which I got after five hours of driving – I had already practiced a bit beforehand …

What would you prefer: a car or a motorcycle?
Well, I had a girlfriend and a car would have been a better choice in many ways.

In 1968 it just turned out to be a motorcycle, right??
Right. A Horex Regina 250. It was with the police in Waldkraiburg and had been confiscated at some point. A beautiful motorcycle with a retrofitted, naturally unregistered high handlebar. Then I drove to school with the machine – that was really cool too. It cost exactly 70 D-Marks.

A year later there was “Easy Rider” in the cinema. Was that a key experience for you?
Yes, of course, I started to be interested in this mentality, this rocker lifestyle. That was reinforced later by this wonderful film by Klaus Lemke: “Rocker” – a fantastic film.

What was the attraction of becoming a rocker??
The break with convention. Every young person, actually every living being, even a tree, wants to find out how far you can go and tries to push through the ceiling. Testing limits – that was what it was all about.

Were you the first rocker in your environment??
No, there were real rockers too. We were still “school rockers”.

Were you really angry anyway and totally misbehaved in pubs or threatening other people with beatings??
No, I’ve only really fought myself once in my entire life. And that was still at the time as a teenager in Romania, when a member of the German minority had arguments with other ethnic groups. One grew up with this awareness of “Don’t touch, otherwise gossip!”.

Always knife on man to this day?
That’s how it is. I never allowed anyone to touch me. But it was never about showing what you can do.
It’s always been about saying, “So far and no further.” That was what it was about when we said we want to be rockers. But exuding confidence was just a story. Much more important was that in these clubs – and thank God that is still the case today – a substitute family was created. That’s what brings people together.

Have you ever been to a classic MC?
Of course, I’m still with the zombies in Nuremberg, and have been for a long time. I know the scene, I can handle it well, but there are also “business models” that I don’t want to have anything to do with.

Your most beautiful motorcycle experiences?
There have been some great tours. Canada is a promised land for motorcycling: British Columbia when the weather is nice – you can’t beat that! I drove across the Spanish mainland several times with a Harley team – just great.

But a few more words about the new album: why Maffay again as a motorcyclist?
The common denominator for the band and me was the question: “What moved us to become musicians?” It wasn’t just about the music of the past, but also the environment that shaped us. The motorcycle has always been present for me over the years, but at some point I couldn’t hear “The rocker with the soft heart” anymore, so I left it. But now I’m so old that I don’t care. The motorcycle is there, not standing around for decoration and being used. And so we took the photos for the album and also processed it in the video.

You had a very tolerant father as a motorcycle instructor. Your son is the same age now as you were then. What does it look like when the junior gets the idea that two bikes are really great?
If he wants to get started – gladly! Preferably with a trial. If he can do this, he has good prerequisites to drive every machine safely.

The biography “Maffay – On the way to me” by Edmund Hartsch.

If you want to find out more about Peter Maffay, Edmund Hartsch’s biography “Maffay – On the Way to Me”, published in 2009, is an extremely entertaining read with lots of Maffay-o-tones. The 416-page tome, which has also been available as a cheap paperback edition of 14.99 euros since 2011, is very well researched and well illustrated. Praise and embarrassing striptease of the soul do not exist, thank God, but the full Maffay and music business life. Anyone who has had little to no use at all with Maffay should treat themselves to the book anyway – or perhaps because of that – because just a look behind the scenes (and into the abysses) of the industry is worth the money.

And with an entertaining reading you will almost certainly get an appetite for (even) more about Maffay. For example, the 128-page book “The 9th Sound – Thoughts of a Driven Man” (paperback 12.99 euros). The title sounds a bit worn out, but the content is all the more direct. Maffay himself explains what drives him, what annoys him and what else he wants to do. A must for Maffay fans.
