Kawasaki VN 900 used advice Cheap and downright opulent

In the mid-range cruiser, the Kawasaki VN 900 stands out with its pronounced opulence. Because although it is almost cheap to have, it has class.

The (not at all) small Vulcan – that’s what it’s called on the US market and also by many fans in this country – makes it look bigger than it is.

Kawasaki speaks of a “long-and-low” design that is based on the UN 2000. Friends of the long wheelbase – the Kawasaki VN 900 is almost 1.65 meters – love true size. But only 50 horses have to pull a whopping 280 kilos. The mid-range bike does this absolutely convincingly with almost 80 Newton meters of torque.

The big two-liter sister thunders through the country with twice the power, but also weighs a good 100 kilos more. When it was officially launched in 2006, the Kawasaki VN 900 also cost almost 10,000 (!) Euros – less than Kawa’s thickest cruiser kawumme – Vulcan fans without a heavy wallet naturally found it easy to choose the 900. Especially since it does not give the driver any feelings of inferiority because it is just as valuable as it looks with its black painted engine block and shiny chrome cylinder rib.

In 2007 the Classic was joined by the sexy Kawasaki VN 900 Custom, which turns the chopper fraction on with its narrow and large front wheel and a cool sitting position (straight T-handlebars). Compared to the conservative Classic, the Custom did not do quite as well in terms of sales, but it does so much better on the road because it is more accurate and with less set-up moment in curves. Two variants of the Classic model were added from 2011 (Special Edition and Light Tourer), and technically not much has changed since then. Yes, one thing: since 2013 only 48 hp – exciting for newcomers and those returning to the sport according to the new driving license regulations. So far, only the retrofit market has offered throttling for older VN 900s.

With an easy-care 21-inch cast front wheel, the 900 offers a good basis for modifications.

“226,000 kilometers run, first engine – and with the machine you can immediately drive to Spain and back again in one go. That says it all, doesn’t it? ”States a Kawa dealer from the Eifel. He describes a customer vehicle. Indeed, this says a lot about the longevity of the VN 900. Technical problems with the V2? Unknown. Other stress? No. A look at the service book is sufficient for the inspection. Is this completely managed and is the machine clean? Buy now, no trouble is expected. A look at the toothed belt does not do any harm, however, because improper maintenance or a foreign body in the drive may require replacement (costs up to over 1000 euros). Accessories are not an issue, original condition is required. Exceptions: With the Classic, original parts suitable for touring, such as windshields or saddlebags, add value, and a sound-enhancing exhaust system from Miller (new from 1250 euros) is always appreciated.

Market situation

Availability of the Kawasaki VN 900 on the market: high.

It is neither expensive nor really cheap. At 5,000 euros, the 900 is an extremely popular model because of its excellent value. With a little luck you can find them for this money second hand with less than 10,000 kilometers on the clock, documented service history and completely without any quirks. Even if expert lists like Schwacke suggest that things start at 3000 euros, offers under 4000 euros – even with higher mileages (well over 40,000 kilometers) and visible signs of use – are just like the proverbial needle in a haystack.

At the other end of the flagpole: over 7,000 euros, dealers find it difficult to get rid of the machine, even if it is in tip-top condition and no matter how low the mileage, because new vehicles with good financing conditions are sometimes hardly more expensive. Private providers (at least around a third) have bad cards anyway with claims at a high price level (over 6,000 euros) because they do not offer any guarantees. Vendors of conversions also find it difficult – there are interested parties with the same taste, but as buyers of used goods they rarely want to support the previous conversion investments.
