She hasn’t been super sports for ages, and nobody likes to classify her as a sports tourer. One term fits best for the nine: sports all-rounder.

Comfort and suitability for everyday use hardly anyone thinks of super athletes, right? The ZX-9R proves otherwise. The nine-man ninja was a model athlete at Kawasaki from 1994 to 2003, and did her job quite well with a lot of steam (around 140 hp). At first it played in the first division, but in the second generation from 1998 the (stiff) fork fluttered in certain driving situations (engine suspension favors resonance vibrations). No drama for moderate sports drivers, but the reputation was cracked, and since the turn of the millennium, ultra-light brute-force devices such as the Yamaha R1 or GSX-R 1000 have increasingly outclassed the Kawa. Well, on the lap it was not particularly smooth in the end, at least as far as lap times were concerned, but the sports machine was a well-rounded affair for the country road. That was a lot of laps, but that’s exactly how this motorcycle is. Wind protection: excellent. Brake system: excellent. All of this is paired with a very comfortable seating position, ergonomics suitable for long journeys as well as easy handling and superior, carburetor-fired engine performance. And at least since the final revision for the 2002 model, the chassis has been flawless.

Sports fanatics do not like to hear the word “suitable for touring”, but touring is great fun with this four-cylinder machine. At least for solo travelers, the passenger comfort is typically rather modest, as is typical for this class. The now elderly athlete ZX-9R, as a conspicuously inexpensive used machine, still offers unprejudiced people a great value because of its remarkable all-round properties.

Six pistons are anchored in the brake system, which was heavily redesigned for the 1996 model year. The result is impressive.

Leaky water pumps and cylinder head gaskets are not uncommon with Type B, and amateur screwdrivers have often tinkered with the machine. Even if the price is low, the follow-up costs are usually not. Basically check the frame and the plastic cladding for cracks and scratches, which say a lot about the condition of the machine and its freedom from falling. Accessory panels are popular for race training, check whether the retrofit parts are street legal! Since a sporty pace – even on country roads – naturally puts a lot of strain on the mechanics, pay attention to the transmission with higher odometer readings (more than 40,000 kilometers): Do the gears engage well, are there any noticeable noises? The models from 1998 to 2001 suffered from considerable fork flutter in extreme areas, so not a good choice for very sporty drivers. Relatively unproblematic, therefore the best purchase tip: last series, type F (from 2002) with as few kilometers as possible.

When it debuted in 1994, the Neuner was a state-of-the-art motorcycle. Nowadays, looking at the classic cockpit almost triggers nostalgic feelings.

With the low prices, entry into the nine-ninja world is comparatively easy. The low-cost offers around 2000 euros (mostly private providers) primarily appeal to younger sport beginners with a “no limits” driver’s license, who want to call a very powerful machine their own despite a mini-budget. Since the density of scrap offers in this price league is comparatively high, interested parties should rather look in the middle price range between 3000 and 4000 euros.

For this money you can find decent dealer offers with a guarantee. More than 5000 euros are only paid for in a few cases, unless connoisseurs are looking for a really nice piece to preserve, which is what the last series is good for. F-types are advertised in large numbers, they make up around a quarter to a third of the total offer, are real second-hand favorites and therefore rarely stay long in the advertising section.

1994
Model debut. The first nine, type B, developed 100 hp. Weight: 243 kg. Price: 19690 marks (10067 euros).

In Germany only 98 instead of 100 hp, six-piston instead of four-piston brake system at the front, grab handles for pillion passengers. Price: 20190 Mark (10,323 euros).
