KTM is updating all of its 1290 models. The new Super Duke has already been presented and driven by us. Now follows the new 1290 Super Adventure S, from the KTM says: It is the sportiest and most technically advanced adventure bike that has ever left the production halls in Mattighofen / Austria. It combines the advantages of a versatile sports tourer with a high focus on ergonomics and comfort in every terrain. In short, this is the ultimate high-performance adventure motorcycle. In other words, an enduro for long-distance racers in disguise.

Modified chassis, new fairing

In order to sharpen the handling of the large two-cylinder enduro, the KTM 1290 Super Adventure S has been given a new chassis, which improves the weight distribution for the benefit of maneuverability. The steering head moved 15 millimeters to the rear, the engine further forward. The new swing arm brings more stability.

A newly formed bodywork reduces the seat height and improves the form fit between the driver and the 23 liter tank. The new bench is divided and can be adjusted by 20 millimeters. The handlebars, the brand new 7-inch TFT display and the windshield, which was developed in the wind tunnel and can be adjusted within a range of 55 millimeters, are also adjustable. The new LED headlights use integrated cornering lights. Overall, the center of gravity of the dry bike weighing 220 kilograms was further centralized and its weight distribution revised. The choice of the first tires with the Mitas Terra Force R in 120/70 ZR 19 at the front and 170/60 ZR 17 at the rear, however, seems a bit retrograde, here KTM leaves the premium sector of tires with its top model, which is the price of the Super Adventure S at first is difficult to argue with. However, the first driving report shows that the Mitas and the KTM can get along very well even in the wet.

More electronics plus adaptive cruise control

The assistance systems have been refurbished. The portfolio includes the driving modes Rain, Street, Sport, Offroad and the improved (optional) rally driving mode. Everyone should now intervene more inconspicuously in what is happening. In addition, the lean angle-dependent motorcycle traction control now has two independent controllers (one for the slip and one for the angle of inclination) that provide their own data and strategies. The cornering ABS and off-road ABS systems rely on the new motorcycle stability control from Bosch, while engine drag torque control is optional.

Based on Bosch radar sensors, the KTM driver can use an adaptive cruise control as standard. It automatically adjusts the distance to other road users in front of the motorcycle and can be set to five levels using the newly designed combination switch.

The new TFT display received a simplified menu navigation and improved information graphics. It is sociable towards smartphones. The TFT display is located above a newly designed storage compartment with a USB charging socket. For communication with the new display, the KTM 1290 Super Adventure S has completely new switches on both sides of the handlebar. A number of new quick selection and favorites buttons allow the driver to change settings while driving and at the same time concentrate on the traffic.

V2 with 160 hp

The beast in the bike still wakes up the 1.3 liter V2, which brings 160 hp and 138 Nm torque to the start in the Euro 5 cut. Thanks to the new, thinner motor housing and a new oil circuit, it loses 1.6 kilograms in weight. The engine exhales through a new exhaust system with two manifolds, while the optional Quickshifter + now shifts even more smoothly thanks to a new switching mechanism from Pankl. New pistons should improve reliability as well as a new coolant / oil system. Its two new coolers, together with the newly designed bodywork, ensure that hot air is diverted away from the driver’s legs. Service intervals of 15,000 km and low consumption round off the revised engine package. The semi-active chassis relies on new valves.

Comprehensive accessory packages

The range of accessories specially revised for the KTM 1290 Super Adventure S also includes the Suspension Pro package, which offers individual damping for the fork and shock absorber, automatic preload adjustment and an anti-dive mode that can be switched off. The comprehensive Tech Pack contains the Rally Pack with the rally driving mode and the associated MTC slip adjustment, all Suspension Pro and Rally Pack features, the Quickshifter +, the engine drag torque control, Hill Hold Control and the adaptive brake light.

The new KTM 1290 Super Adventure S is due to hit dealerships from February. Prices start at 18,495 euros.

Conclusion

The new 1290 Super Adventure S has even less to do with enduro than before. Rather, she relies on extremely fast travel. The adaptive cruise control is a real gain in comfort and safety, the unusual choice of initial tires does not prevent this, even in the rain.
