Coke or Valerian, Upper or Downer? Turn or push? The KTM 1290 Super Duke R and the self-made Voluno MT-01 are opposite and yet also the same. Which moves you more?

You are currently wondering what a “Schleuniger” is? Well, I’ll explain it to you. A Schleuniger is a motorcycle that has the ability to move its rider. And not just from A to B, but primarily emotionally. Do you drive a BMW R 100 RT or Suzuki GS 500 and therefore don’t know that feeling? It’s a shame, then you should definitely try out a bike with a lot of character, for example a Super Duke R. Everyone else who knows what I’m talking about should be told that both the KTM 1290 Super Duke R as well as the Voluno MT-01, but are very different representatives of the Schleuniger genus.

The Schleuniger

The 1290 Super Duke R and the Voluno MT-01 are quickly told. Thick V-Twins ensure confident propulsion or even a gun license requirement, steel tubular space frames are woven around these brilliant drive units and their destination is not the racetrack, but the country road. But that’s it with the similarities, if you disregard the relaxed, sporty seating position, the lack of wind protection and the ample lean angle. It is much more exciting to look at the differences between the two. On the one hand, a mass product that has been reproduced a thousand times over, and on the other, a unique piece built in over 1000 working hours. Here the red pen-leading controller, there the hammer-swinging window fitter who knocks his sheet steel tank himself. And yet both motorcycles were created with the aim of not only moving motorcyclists, but also captivating them. And they do it tremendously!

Unique symbiosis of stoic calm and appealing handling

The Voluno MT-01 is the brainchild of owner Eberhard Berhalter. He wanted “good things for the Landstraass”. A motorcycle that can be moved quickly and, above all, binds him intensely. A bike that you let five be on, that fascinates you from the first turn of the crankshaft. And so he created his personal decelerator, the Voluno.

Slower because this rumble of the engine, this elemental beast of a V-Zwo never lets the hectic pace, does not even begin to recognize stress. This casualness – or better said sovereignty of the 115 kilogram unit – has a lasting impact on the character of the Voluno MT-01. The frame designed and built by Sam Wassermann’s company UNO with its sporty, active geometry does not change anything. But: The UNO chassis is the best that could ever happen to this engine and creates this unique symbiosis of elephant-like, stoic calm and appealing handling.

KTM 1290 Super Duke R a radical and brutal naked bike

A 66.5 degree steering head angle, 98 millimeters of caster and 1500 millimeters of wheelbase as well as a seat position that was moved 15 centimeters forward (compared to the original Yamaha MT-01) give the Voluno MT-01 a previously unknown dynamic. But even in its new sphere of activity, the twin, which has been drilled out to 1810 cubic meters and also otherwise revised in some details, remains true to itself. He pushes like a cold-blooded horse, not only pulls the sausage off the bread when idling, but also pulls whole trees out of the forest. While he moves whole mountains between 2000 and 3000 tours, he is already running out of breath for over 5000.

So not a sporty opponent for the KTM 1290 Super Duke R, whose 1301 cubic high-tech twin doesn’t give the antiquated bumper motor a chance? Right, not an opponent, but an opposite pole. The Voluno MT-01 from the Ent-Schleuniger, the Super Duke R from the Be-Schleuniger. This explosive KTM is a radical and brutal naked bike, it is the ultimate accelerator. It teases instead of calming down, ignites and provokes instead of extinguishing or mediating! It goes off like a rocket, constantly asking its pilot to play or to heat. The pulse rises automatically by 20 beats when you sit on it. A wonderful drug for all those who don’t get up to speed in everyday life or who are looking for the ultimate kick on the road after work.

KTM more manageable, faster, safer and better too?

If you apply objective standards to the KTM 1290 Super Duke R and Voluno MT-01, it quickly becomes clear which is the better motorcycle. The KTM is more handy, faster, better equipped, cheaper, safer. And of course also the test winner. But who needs these results all the time when the motorcyclist’s life is about more than points. Rather, the question is whether these two motorcycles could give their riders the same emotional experiences and could stand in the same garage? Let’s just look at our resume and our everyday life. Young and hot-blooded, you automatically reach for the KTM. Nothing goes fast enough, KTM is the perfect partner at this time, in this phase of life. But only a little later, having arrived at work and trapped in this hamster wheel, which is turning ever faster, the question arises whether a lap around the block on the Austrian rocket is the right thing after a day in the red area?

Jahn

This explosive KTM is a radical and brutal naked bike, it is the ultimate accelerator.

Under these circumstances, the Voluno appears like the savior in shining light. She’s the downer who brings you down again. Your calming blow, your acceleration from the lowest speed regions grounds you again instead of pushing you harder. Let’s take a town drive through, for example: if you drive through the inner-city area on the KTM 1290 Super Duke R in third gear and open the tap at the end of the town, there is no tomorrow! The stove goes off like Schmidt’s cat, tears a notch in the asphalt and shoots you into orbit like hardly any other bike. In a ridiculously short amount of time the clock is over 150 km / h and the beast just keeps accelerating! The same scenario on the Voluno MT-01: In the third through the village, the needle of the rev counter hangs below the big 2 on the instrument cluster. Now just open it up, enjoy this thrust with an incomparable punch and thump and insert the fourth very, very quickly. To do this, pull the clutch with four fingers, klock, change gear, release the clutch, open the tap.

Both pull their master off the stool

Before you know it, the KTM 1290 Super Duke R is gone and it’s time to change to last gear. Klock – done! Great, the fat Langhuber pushes, the KTM is gone and far ahead. It is calm again and at 150 km / h on the country road it’s over. Competition, no thanks! With just over 2000 tours in the last gear, the speedometer shows 100 km / h and the MT-01 drive is in the maximum fun range, which is between 1700 and 3500 tours. So relaxed you automatically leave it out of town at a maximum of 150 km / h, which is already fast enough. While the KTM is always looking for new opponents, wanting to match and fight, the Voluno MT-01 stands above this youthful demeanor and acts with rock-solid self-confidence.

So it is not the form of the day that decides whether you want to press or turn sustainably, but rather the perceived age and maturity in the pilot’s head. Which would answer the question of sharing a garage: No, Voluno MT-01 and KTM 1290 Super Duke R next to each other in the fleet, that doesn’t fit. And what about the emotional bond that both irons build with the pilot? Well, there is a definite stalemate. Because both tear their master off the stool. Every day anew and that for many years. It’s just a shame that the Voluno is a one-off, that Yamaha would never dare to do a project like that and that Harley killed the Buells. So the only thing left for us poor swallowers is the super hammer among the Schleunigers – off with a pulse of 300 into the evening!

Readings

PS

The distance covered by both bikes.

This measurement illustrates the power of the KTM 1290 Super Duke R, equipped with ride-by-wire, double ignition and the latest electronic engine management. H.

The throttle valves of both engines are fully opened for four seconds directly at the end of the town sign. The result of this exercise is frightening, however. The KTM defied the Voluno MT-01 by 21 meters in the short period of time and reached a top speed of 153 km / h on this intermediate sprint.

Engine power

PS

The measured values of the engine power.

Geez! The KTM 1290 Super Duke R has almost as much power in the trimmed rain mode as the Voluno MT-01. On the torque side, however, the latter prevails in every speed range. However, with the powerful stroke of 113 millimeters, you run out of breath at just over 5000 tours.

The KTM 1290 Super Duke R, on the other hand, pushes and turns like a berserk from 3500 rpm to 8500 rpm. This is how a wildfire becomes a wildfire.

Acceleration diagrams, 3rd gear and last gear

PS

The acceleration charts.

The diagram at the top proves (also in comparison to the twin superbike Ducati 1199 Panigale, red line) how brute the KTM 1290 Super Duke R is. At around 140 km / h in third gear, a pulling force of almost 3000 Newtons acts on the rear wheel.

The Voluno MT-01 leaves it at a maximum of 2200 Newtons. In the last gear (Voluno 5th, KTM and Ducati 6th gear) the tractive effort is significantly lower due to the longer gear ratios. The two naked bikes still do well in the last gear.

Gear diagram

PS

The gear diagram.

In this graphic, a current twin superbike (Ducati 1199 Panigale, red lines) was used. The flatter the curve, the shorter the gear ratio of a motorcycle. The Voluno MT-01, which has to live with only five gears, has relatively large gear ratio jumps between the individual gear steps, which its high-torque motor can handle.

The KTM 1290 Super Duke R, on the other hand, has an almost superbike-like gear ratio with a long first gear and then narrower gear steps. However, it is translated quite long – theoretically it is good for 290 km / h.

Conclusion

Jahn

Both pull their master off the stool. Every day anew and that for many years.

KTM 1290 Super Duke R.
There are no points and no winner or loser in this story. Nevertheless, it must be said that the KTM 1290 Super Duke R is superior to the Voluno MT-01 in all aspects of driving dynamics. The nice thing is that anyone can buy them and drive around with them. The bad thing is, anyone can buy it…

Voluno MT-01
She is definitely the winner of hearts. And one of the most characterful bikes the author has ever ridden. Wow what a device! After a short period of acclimatization, you grow together with the Voluno MT-01 and learn to love its weaknesses. One cannot expect more from anything or anyone. It’s a shame that it is unique.
