The mini dukes are produced inexpensively in India. There they used the 125 modular system for the 390, took a larger engine, carried out minor model-building measures such as a more rigidly braced swing arm and slight modifications to the chassis.

Hit for beginners

The KTM 390 Duke has been one of the most popular machines among young drivers with a license since 2013. The bare single-cylinder machine is also a hit second-hand.

Thorsten Dentges

The KTM 125 Duke, presented in 2010, became a bestseller among the youngest motorcycle beginners, 16-year-old A1 driving license novices. Looked sharp, drove wonderfully jagged. In Austrian: it fits! Now, however, young people tick differently than young adults with an A2 driving license, who are allowed to drive with an impressive 48 hp. So it was not set in 2013 that the new KTM 390 Duke would also be a hit.

Yes, it was even a risk to put a strong, but with a maximum of 44 hp, single-cylinder engine, far removed from superlatives, in the already familiar 125cc frame. After all, KTM-inclined beginners could have resorted to a 690 Duke throttled to 48 hp, which can be freed to a fat 70 hp after the driver’s license upgrade. But Mattighofen thinks globally and not just about new drivers. In Asia in particular, there is a high demand for small-volume motorcycles. The mini dukes are produced inexpensively in India. There you used the KTM 390 Duke from the 125 modular system, took a larger engine, carried out minor model-building measures such as a more rigidly braced swing arm and slight modifications to the chassis.

The naked bike, which weighs just over 150 kilograms, was sold almost 1,500 times in Germany in the year following its market launch, and in 2015 it even became a bestseller in the KTM range. Apparently, many drivers knew the ultra-easy handling of the KTM 390 Duke very much appreciated. And the low new price of a good 5000 euros, especially since a Bosch ABS is standard on board. The processing sometimes leaves a lot to be desired, owners often report small annoyances such as faulty speedometers or problems with the electrical system.

Radial brakes and upside-down forks stand out in the class comparison, but fading and stucky appealing suspension elements stand in the way of super agile handling during a brisk ride. Fans of the speedster can probably live with that – the KTM 390 Duke just makes you want to go. That’s fine!

Market situation

KTM 390 Duke in used advice

bilski-fotografie.de

Mattighofen thinks globally and not just about newcomers to German driving licenses. In Asia in particular, there is a high demand for small-volume motorcycles.

Still young, but a good best seller. Since the new KTM 390 Duke has been selling surprisingly well since 2013, there are already quite a few on the used market.

from 3300 euros

Sample ad: 7750 km, EZ 07/2014, inspection and general inspection new. Some tuning parts were installed: short rear end, crash pads (Evotech Performance), CNC-milled and anodized brake and gear levers. Ideal basis for further tuning. 3590 euros (private offer from NRW)

Low price level. Nobody should expect hammer bargains, because so far there are hardly any cross-country skiers on the used market with the still young machine. Recognizable scheme: few kilometers, still quite high price.

from 4000 euros

Sample ad: 1636 km, EZ 05/2015, HU 5/2017, almost as good as new, garage motorcycle, not tinkered with, real 2015 model with all the modifications such as slipper clutch (racing clutch), LED. 4350 euros (private offer from Hessen)

Medium price level. Greatest density of offers. It’s no problem to save a few hundreds compared to the original price and still get hold of a super-well-maintained bike as new. The ratio of private to dealer offers is roughly two to one.

from 4500 euros

Sample ad: 1638 km, EZ 06/2014, new general inspection, beautiful KTM 390 Duke ABS with lots of accessories. Accessory seat, pillion seat cover, crash bars, crash pads on the front and rear axles. 4590 euros (dealer from Saxony)

High price level. Used KTM 390 Duke only sell well below their original price with a lot of upgrading accessories. Or when new vehicles are currently not available in the area, but the interested party absolutely wants to saddle up as soon as possible.

Dealer interview with Rober Bauer

Half-timbered style: The aluminum swing arm, which is cheaply produced using the die-casting process, offers sufficient rigidity.

Robert Bauer (32), master two-wheeler mechanic at KTM Stuttgart (www.ktm-stuttgart.com) answered our questions.

MOTORCYCLE: Who are typical interested parties in the KTM 390 Duke?

Robert Bauer: There are a lot of them, but not just young drivers. The motorcycle is particularly popular with older returnees who have already taken a break for a long time and are therefore a little unsafe with machines that are too heavy. And in the female motorcycle world. But then there are also many who are looking for a city runabout – especially here in the metropolis of Stuttgart. The KTM 390 Duke is small, agile and ideal for bustling through when traffic comes to a standstill. I think the popularity is similar in other metropolitan areas as well.

MOTORCYCLE: So a typical short-haul vehicle.

Robert Bauer: No. We had a customer who just drove to Lake Garda in the KTM 390 Duke. When it comes to original accessories, the comfort seat is in great demand and we have retrofitted GPS mounts. Well, there are obviously enough people who take tours with it. One of our customer machines already has over 30,000 kilometers under its belt. You can hardly achieve this in such a short time with just short trips.

MOTORCYCLE: What other accessories are popular??

Robert Bauer: Almost all machines are equipped with hand guards and crash pads.

MOTORCYCLE: Aha, noticeable …

Robert Bauer: Well, as I said, there are a lot of insecure beginners and returnees. And the young, a little wilder, already know why crash pads make sense for them. [laughs]

MOTORCYCLE: Otherwise frequent problems?

Robert Bauer: Hardly. The speedometer and the indicators are unfortunately not always well sealed against water. The indicator glasses will then be fogged up and the speedometer will malfunction or fail completely. That would be a typical weak point. In view of the relatively large number of KTM 390 Duke sold, these are rather isolated cases.

MOTORCYCLE: What is the general quality of the KTM 390 Duke produced in India??

Robert Bauer: As a mechanic, if you look closely at certain details, you can tell that KTMs from Austria are a little more accurate. But the “Indian quality” is also impressive, especially since everything usually works well and without any problems. In the beginning there were a few teething troubles with the 125 from India. But KTM learned quickly from this, and with the 390, which was only brought onto the market later, these mistakes have long been eliminated. Overall, the small KTM 390 Duke is a solid motorcycle.

Now and then a problem child: the speedometer. Sometimes had to be exchanged defective after a short time.

2013:Market launch of the KTM 390 Duke made in India. The single-cylinder four-stroke engine with 44 hp is in the steel space frame from the KTM 125 Duke, which has been available since 2010. Total weight with a full tank: 152 kg. A newly designed aluminum swingarm and tighter spring elements from WP Suspension also distinguish the 390 from the 125. Due to the low power-to-weight ratio with open power, level driving license holders are only allowed to drive with a maximum of 41 hp. Another power variant: 33 hp. Registration numbers in Germany: 384 units. Color: white with black and orange. Price: 4955 euros.

2014:New color: black (with orange), white also remains on offer. Registration numbers in Germany: 1482 pieces. Price: 4995 euros.

2015:New driving license A2 variant with 41 hp. New: slipper clutch. Registration numbers in Germany: 1394 pieces.
Colors and price unchanged.

2016: Registration numbers in Germany (January to June): 981 units. Colors and price unchanged.
