In 2017, KTM founded a production joint venture with the Chinese motorcycle manufacturer CF Moto. From autumn 2020 the Chinese will build the KTM middle class.

To expand the market presence in China, had KTM In 2017 a joint venture with the Chinese manufacturer CF Moto was initiated. The Austrians hold 49 percent of the joint venture named CF MOTO-KTMR2.

In March 2018, the construction of a joint plant at the CF Moto headquarters in Hangzhou, China, 200 kilometers south of Shanghai, began. Production is scheduled to start in June 2020 at the new location, which is designed for an annual production of 50,000 units. If necessary, the production volume should be able to be increased to up to 100,000 vehicles.

KTM middle class from model year 2021 from China

As KTM boss Stefan Pierer confirmed in February 2018, CF Moto in China will build the entire KTM middle class for the world market from September 2020. From model year 2021 onwards, all 790 and 890 models from KTM are expected to roll off the production lines of the Chinese joint venture. KTM expects this to relieve the main plant in Mattighofen, where one can then focus on other series – for example the 1290 models. In addition, production in the Far East is likely to be significantly cheaper than in Austria.

CF Moto has been working with KTM since 2011 and supports the Austrians with imports and sales in China, among other things. In addition, the Chinese built KTM Duke 200 and KTM Duke 390 models from India for the Chinese market. For the future, the Chinese are planning to put their own motorcycles around the licensed 990 LC8 two-cylinder from KTM. The Chinese also rely on the KTM subsidiary Kiska Design for design. At the EICMA, CF Moto presented a new 700 series. The previous portfolio comprised machines with displacements from 125 to 650 cm³. Some of these are also offered in Europe. Other important pillars are side-by-side vehicles and ATVs.
