Even at the risk of getting boring, don’t keep it a secret: KTM has outdone itself once again in 2017. With over 200,000 machines sold, the Austrians continued the history of their sales records for the sixth year in a row. Even if the off-road bikes still make up the lion’s share of production at 61 percent, it is obvious that the manufacturer is increasingly focusing on the on-road range. As a result, nothing has changed in the spirit of the men in orange. On the contrary.

The entry into the MotoGP class documents the company motto “Ready to race” more than ever. Especially since the Austrians – parallel to the cost-intensive and labor-intensive MotoGP project – have brought one of the most important developments of the recent past to series production for the 2018 model year: the 790 Duke. With the naked bike with an 800 series twin-cylinder engine, the KTM developers are leaving every protective niche for the first time and are going on a confrontational course in the mercilessly contested middle class. A fight that may be harder to win than some racing championships.

Finally, a quick look at the number of new registrations of the past year: with the KTM 690 Duke, the Austrians landed in the top 5 of the new registration statistics in 2017. A total of 2,299 units of the popular naked bikes were newly registered last year. Also at the forefront are the KTM 1290 Super Duke R (10th place with 1,459 new registrations) and the KTM 1290 Super Adventure (13th place with 1,362 new registrations). It will be interesting to see where the new KTM 790 Duke in terms of new registrations this year. In any case, there is enough potential to land high up.
