Two modules can be pushed into prepared slots, another module is firmly fixed in the scooter. If necessary, this main cell is charged via the additional modules and is always tapped by the engine first. In addition, three additional modules can be accommodated in the helmet compartment. Equipped with the 6 modules, the range should be up to 200 kilometers.

The Taiwanese two-wheeler manufacturer Kymco had already presented an electric scooter including a battery replacement system at the Tokyo Motorcycle Show in March 2018. Two electric scooters for Germany were presented at INTERMOT.

Anyone who drives purely electrically on the road lives permanently with the fear of range. Kymco wants to counteract this with the new Ionex electric scooters and a new battery exchange system. These were presented at the Tokyo Motorcycle Show 2018. A few weeks earlier, competitor Honda had also presented a corresponding concept in Tokyo.

Exchangeable batteries as energy storage

At INTERMOT in Cologne, Kymco announced the premium model New Like 110 EV and the entry-level model Nice 100 EV as the first two Ionex electric scooters for Germany. Eight more e-scooters are to follow in the next three years.

The battery modules should be able to be refilled at special charging stations.

The Ionex rollers present themselves as conventionally constructed rollers. The basic Nice 100 EV scooter has an output of 1.5 kW and 50 Nm, rolls on ten-inch steel wheels, weighs 77 kilograms and decelerates with drum brakes. The entry-level scooter should be 45 km / h fast. The New Like 110 EV has 3 kW and 124 Nm, weighs 110 kilograms, rolls on 12-inch cast aluminum wheels and decelerates with a disc at the front and a drum brake at the rear. The equipment here includes a connectivity module with which the scooter can be comprehensively networked. The electric scooters should be available from summer 2019. Prices have not yet been announced.

Even more interesting is the energy system that the Taiwanese have knitted around this scooter. Battery plug-in modules are responsible for the power supply of the electric motor, which are placed in a bottom compartment with a low focus. Two modules can simply be pushed into prepared slots here. Another module is firmly fixed in the scooter. If necessary, this main cell is charged via the additional modules and is always tapped by the engine first. In addition, three additional modules can be accommodated in the helmet compartment. Equipped with the 6 modules, the range should be up to 200 kilometers.

Comprehensive charging stations

If an energy storage device is emptied, the handy module, which weighs less than 5 kilograms, can be easily removed and recharged at any socket. Alternatively, the modules can also be filled at the public charging station.

Market launch in India too

Kymco wants to roll out charging stations across the board.

If Kymco has its way, however, the energy storage devices should be replenished and kept available in charging stations that are distributed across the entire area, so that there is virtually unlimited mobility. Kymco states that the charging time is around one hour.

As is so often the case with electric drive concepts, the Kymco system also suffers from a still missing charging infrastructure. Kymco itself intends to create appropriate infrastructures in 20 countries over the next three years. In Germany, the first charging stations are to be built from summer 2019. In addition, ten purely electrically powered models are to be offered, of which the Taiwanese want to sell over 500,000 copies worldwide.

Kymco expects a powerful boost for the system from the market launch in India, which has now been announced, because India is considered the largest two-wheeler market in the world. In the subcontinent, Kymco will partner with Twenty Two Motors, an Indian company focused on developing advanced connected electric vehicles. Support is also coming from the Indian government, which is actively promoting the green movement through measures that promote the use of electric vehicles and the development of EV infrastructure.
