Whether marker lights are allowed or not – there is not always a uniform opinion even among law enforcement officers. Fortunately, this is not about opinions, but about a very clear legal situation.

Excitement in the MOTORRAD editorial team: Currently, three MOTORRAD editors have suffered the same fate. All of them have been on the road with a current Honda in the past few days, until they were suddenly summoned to the side of the road by waving motorcycle police officers or asked to talk to them directly at the red light. The reason: the marker lights, also known as position lights, integrated as standard in the indicators on numerous Honda models. With the sentences “But this is not permitted in Germany” and “So they have to go to the dealer and have a new relay installed” the editors were reprimanded. Turn signals should not shine permanently in Germany, so the law enforcement officers.

Although two of the three MOTORRAD employees pointed out the new legal situation (see below), the officials could not be convinced at first. The argument that almost all new Honda models were and will be homologated with this configuration and approved accordingly did not work either. Oral rebuke remained.

However, we were able to clarify the incident with the police, who confirmed to us that this type of marker light is a legal configuration.

From MOTORRAD edition 8/2016

The last report in MOTORRAD issue 8/2016 on the admissibility of the position lights in the indicators using the example of the Honda Africa Twin was as follows:

A new EU law makes it possible, and Honda has already implemented it: On new models, the front indicators light up permanently. In this way, the slim motorcycle silhouette is visually broadened and the motorcycle is easier to recognize for other road users. The basic idea is as simple as it is effective: The indicators replace the position lights that have been prescribed for new machines for several years. This kills two birds with one stone, because the technical effort is reduced (fewer components) and active safety is increased at the same time (better recognizability).

And what if you just want to give the signal to turn, i.e. want to blink? Everything is as usual: on, off. Because the indicators remain indicators. The only difference is that the light is significantly brighter in flashing mode than in continuous light mode. The legal basis is the UNECE regulation 53.01, which applies to vehicle manufacturers worldwide. It only relates to the front of the motorcycle, the rear indicators continue to work as usual. The first motorcycle that came onto the market in Germany with permanent light front indicators was the 2013 model year CBR 600 RR. Small downer for owners of older machines: The permanent light indicators for better visibility cannot be retrofitted, the technical and time expenditure would be loud Honda too big for this.
