The driving license class A2 with its maximum 48 hp is extremely interesting. The machines are already very fast with this performance and the possibility of throttling motorcycles with a maximum of 95 hp is tempting.

The older semesters will still painfully remember the first two throttled years when you had to slide around as a newcomer with 34 or even only 27 hp. During carburetor times with throttle valve stops or perforated disks in the intake manifold, heavy boxes usually became rolling obstacles. The EU and the A2 class were lucky, the power limit grew to 48 hp. The way for great mopeds with a maximum of 35 kilowatts of power and powerful torque was clear. And thanks to the possible throttling of motorcycles with 95 hp to 48 hp, there is almost no limit in terms of equipment and prestige.

A2 motorcycles strong in the market

With these signs it is no wonder that the A2 motorcycles are a strong pillar in terms of new registrations in 2020. After all, a good 15 percent of the market is in the 35 to 48 hp class and will symbolically break the 20,000 mark in new registrations in 2020. An increase of 29.5 percent or 4,558 units over the previous year, so one of the mainsprings for that excellent past motorcycle year.

What would have been nice at the start in 1999, 48 HP in light packaging. But: a throttled one CX 500 it was with me. Today, it is much easier for novice drivers to get on board with the right equipment. And such a light machine with 48 hp – and the appropriate skill in the saddle – will always sting in tight curve combat.
