The history of Moto Guzzi is full of history, grandiose motorcycles, great victories, spectacular adventures and extraordinary personalities, all together sharing the legendary reputation of the brand with the “Mandello Eagle” have co-founded.

Every Moto Guzzi that goes out into the world has been made in the Mandello factory since 1921. Built in the place where Moto Guzzi was founded exactly 100 years ago. And if Roberto Colaninno, Chairman and CEO of the Piaggio Group, to which Moto Guzzi has belonged since 2004, goes, it will stay that way for the next 100 years.

This is how Guzzi came to the eagle

The unmistakable trademark, the “Mandello Eagle”, who shaped the myth of Moto Guzzi to a large extent, has always been inextricably linked with the history of Italy. The eagle with the outstretched wings refers to the military service of the company founders Carlo Guzzi and Giorgio Parodi from their time together with the Italian naval aviators during the First World War “Marina Regia” return. Together with their friend, the pilot Giorgio Ravelli, the two had decided to set up a company to manufacture motorcycles after the end of the war. Ravelli died in an air accident in 1919 and was never able to realize his dream. Guzzi and Parodi chose the eagle as the symbol of their brand in memory of their friend and companion.

Moto Guzzi Normale – it all started with her in 1921.

This was the starting point of an industrial company based in Mandello del Lario – in whose halls the motorcycles with the eagle are still manufactured today. Motorcycles like the GT 500 Norge (1928), with which Carlo Guzzi’s brother Giuseppe drove to the Arctic Circle, the Airone 250 (1939) or the Galletto (1950), which made people mobile in the post-war period, shaped the early years.

In 1950, Moto Guzzi was the world’s first manufacturer to build a state-of-the-art wind tunnel in Mandello del Lario. From 1935 until the retirement from racing in 1957, Moto Guzzi set a total of 15 speed records (the Guzzi Otto Cilindri, for example, reached 285 km / h) as well as 14 world championship titles and 11 victories in the Tourist Trophy.

In the mid-1960s, Moto Guzzi presented the 90 ° V2 engine with cardan drive, which was to become the trademark of the brand. This engine formed the basis for models such as the Guzzi V7, the V7 Special, V7 Sport, the California and Le Mans. The 90 ° V2 concept has been consistently maintained and maintained to this day. All current models rely on this drive layout.
