Loris Capirossi as the official tester of electric motorcycles, Dorna as the host of a Stromer Cup as part of the motorcycle world championship – the world of two-wheelers seems to be changing irrevocably.

Electric motorcycles are always referred to as electricity, that goes without saying. Now there should be tension: Dorna, who has been organizing the motorcycle world championship for decades, will be hosting the MotoE racing series from 2019, exclusively for electric motorcycles. And not in the backyard on B-racetracks, but where the premier class competes with protagonists like Valentino Rossi and Marc Márquez and the international media interest is concentrated.

Specifically, five appearances of the Stromer Cup are currently planned for next year, all of them on European racetracks as part of the motorcycle world championship; Whether the Sachsenring will be there is not yet certain. The timing of the e-race will even be prominent: “We are planning to let the e-motorcycles start after the MotoGP warm-up and before the Moto3 race,” says Dorna boss Carmelo Ezpeleta. “That guarantees optimal television coverage.”

Dorna and with it the FIM motorcycle world federation obviously do not want to miss the future trend, but rather integrate it into their realm in good time. The main sponsor of the E-World Cup is Enel, Italy’s largest electricity supplier. He wants to make sure that the batteries of the racing electricians are always full. For this purpose, mobile charging stations are being developed that should take a maximum of 30 minutes for a full charge.

However, the new class cannot be called a real world championship, it is rather a world cup in which all drivers compete on the same motorcycle: on the Ego Corsa, a racing version of the street athlete Ego from the manufacturer Energica from Modena in Italy. Their key data in the MotoE class should be close to that of the production motorcycle, with 150 hp, a torque of 200 Nm, a top speed of 250 km / h and an acceleration from 0 to 100 in three seconds. Loris Capirossi, three-time world champion on petrol motorcycles and promoted from Dorna to official e-motorcycle tester, is very impressed by his first three rides on the Stromer: “Because there is no gearbox, the Ego reacts without any delay, there is none Performance holes. You can play with the throttle according to all the rules of the art, that’s a lot of fun. “The Ego Corsa is only significantly heavier than other racing motorcycles because of the weight of the batteries, says the 45-year-old:” But despite its 240 kilos, it works on the Handy and agile slopes. “

The Dorna plan provides that seven private teams from the Moto GP class with two drivers each compete on the Ego Corsa, plus other teams from the Moto2 and Moto3 classes. A total of 18 pilots will take part. Dorna boss Ezpeleta did not want to say anything official about the length of the races, rumors said it would last for around 20 minutes. However, there will be no change of vehicle during the race, the drivers have to manage the energy supply of the Ego Corsa, just like the pilots of the traditional classes with gasoline. Ezpeleta promises: “We will experience real sprint races.”

Ex-world champion Capirossi has already made friends with the Ego Corsa. “Of course it’s unfamiliar to drive such a quiet motorcycle,” says the Italian. “That’s why I heard my knee protectors drag across the asphalt for the first time in my life. An impressive experience. “

Interview – “The engine noise is actually a defect”

Livia Cevolini. The dynamic engineer is the head of the manufacturer Energica from Modena in northern Italy. He only builds electric motorcycles and was chosen by Dorna as the supplier of the vehicles for the new MotoE races in the motorcycle world championship.

Why did Dorna choose your motorcycles?

Because we are the best! (laughs) I think there are two reasons: On the one hand, our motorcycle is tried and tested, fast and reliable. On the other hand, a serious partner is of course important to Dorna. Energica has been around for ten years, our parent company CRP for half a century, it is also a Formula 1 supplier. That creates trust.

18 drivers are to start in the MotoE class, all on their Ego Corsa. The teams don’t choose you, but Dorna. Don’t worry about your technology being stolen?

No not at all. The heart of an electric motorcycle is the software, which cannot be easily copied and is also protected by patents. And the Ego Corsa is not a newly developed secret prototype, but a racing version of our athlete Ego, and anyone can buy it now.

Just provide the motorcycles, or Energica will also be there for the races?

We are of course there! We are currently building our own department for MotoE use. Of course, we also provide our teams with our support on the racetrack.

Are you not concerned about the limited range? In the MOTORRAD test of the sister model, the Ego, the Eva, the battery was empty after 40 kilometers at full throttle.

Every vehicle, whether electric or gasoline, has a severely limited range at full throttle. That doesn’t matter in the MotoE Cup, after all, people don’t always go full throttle. In general, we are planning a slightly modified power train for the Ego Corsa, which will improve the performance data on the racetrack.

Think racing is the right approach to getting e-mobility going?

Definitely! Racing combines technology and passion in a unique way. I hope that through the MotoE Cup, many motorcyclists will overcome their distrust of electric motorcycles simply by experiencing the technology up close. The fact that Dorna organizes the races as part of the motorcycle world championship gives the series a very special weight right from the start and helps it attract a lot more attention than Formula E in the automotive sector, we are very pleased.

However, some fans say that the passion for racing is inextricably linked with the sound. Believe that its absence is an obstacle?

To be honest, this constant discussion goes in circles. The loud noise and the generation of heat were undesirable side effects in the development of the internal combustion engine, as they result in a loss of efficiency. We all have come to love this defect – and nothing else is the noise – over time, that’s true. But now maybe it is time to open up to something new. Once people see and hear MotoE races, they will find that electric motorcycles are by no means lacking in sound. He’s just different.
