MotoGP racing calendar 2021
Australia canceled, Portugal replaced

The corona pandemic continues to affect motorcycle racing activities. The FIM and Dorna have to adjust the MotoGP calendar again for 2021. The race in Phillip Island has to be canceled again and will be replaced by a second race in Portugal.

MotoGP fans can look forward to 19 races in the 2021 season. The corresponding schedule is anything but fixed. Again, FIM and Dorna had to adjust the calendar.

The season opening Grand Prix took place in Qatar from March 26th to 28th. The following weekend, MotoGP made a guest appearance from April 2-4 on the same Losail International Circuit for the second event – the Doha Grand Prix. The Autodromo Internacional do Algarve in Portugal then hosted the third round of the championship from April 16 to 18, before the paddock drove to the Circuito de Jerez-Angel Nieto as planned.

USA slips in, Thailand GP is postponed

After Jerez the traditional journey through Europe takes place: the GPs of France, Italy, Catalonia, Germany and the Netherlands are behind us. After the summer break, the double pack will follow in Austria, Great Britain, Aragon and San Marino, before it will be time for the overseas races in October. The start is the now-terminated USA GP from October 1st to 3rd. The Grand Prix of Thailand will therefore take place a week later (October 15-17) than previously planned. However, the Japanese GP had to be canceled due to Corona. From Thailand, the GP entourage should then move on to Australia and Malaysia. But now the organizers had to cancel the run in Phillip Island for the year 2021 as well. Portimao step into the breach on November 7th to host another GP. This brings the Malaysian GP one week forward to October 24th. The season finale will take place in Valencia from November 12th to 14th.

Finland out, Austria twice and with fans

The GP Finland has already been canceled. The ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and the resulting travel restrictions to Finland made it necessary to cancel the run planned for July 11th. As a replacement for the Kimi-Ring, with which the contract has currently been extended until 2026, the Red Bull Ring in Austria will step in from August 6 to 8, which will host the MotoGP for two consecutive weekends. And: on both Austrian racing weekends, fans are again allowed to go to the track, provided they have been vaccinated, tested or recovered. There is no numerical edition.

Brno is history

The Czech Republic does not take place at all in the 2021 calendar. Brno had a valid contract with the rights holder Dorna, but refused to carry out the necessary new asphalt for 2021. In times of Corona there is simply a lack of financial resources. Now Ivana Ulmanova, director of the route, announced that there are generally no more World Championship races planned. The ring will be used for other purposes in the future.
