Tactic question

48 points ahead of Lorenzo, 59 points ahead of Rossi – Márquez was able to significantly extend his lead in the World Championship table at the MotoGP Sachsenring. He owes his victory at the German GP to good tactics and his willingness to take risks.

At the beginning with a wet track, towards the end of the race with dry asphalt – that’s what the MotoGP riders had to do with last Sunday at the Sachsenring. The two most exciting questions were the timing of the bike change and the choice of tires. Marc Márquez decided on the 18th lap to switch to the bike with slicks and dry setup. Before that, he made a trip into the gravel trap on lap 11, but stayed seated and got his Honda back on course.

With the second bike he started his triumphal march: the leaders around Rossi and Dovizioso did another 6 laps with rain tires. And as if a late change wasn’t enough of a disadvantage – because Márquez made a splendid catch-up spurt on his slicks – Rossi’s second motorcycle was fitted with intermediates. So Il Dottore tried to get as many points as possible with this bike, while Marc Márquez was on an almost completely dry line with slicks. To stay with the World Cup ranking: Márquez got 25 points with his first place. Rossi got 8 points for his 8th place and the rain-paralyzed Lorenzo got 1 point for his 15th place.

Promising start for Rossi

Rossi justified this tactic after the race with the pentathlon against Dovizioso, Barbera, Crutchlow and Miller.
It looked promising for Rossi at the beginning. After relegating Márquez to fourth place, Rossi, Dovizioso and Petrucci fought exciting fights and took turns at the top. Behind Márquez: Jack Miller, Hector Barbera and Andrea Iannone – by the way, all 7 drivers are still close together. Ok, that was only the third round.

Pedrosa overtook Pol Espargaro and took 8th place, while Lorenzo, who was paralyzed by rain, was 10th in the top 10. After all? Yes, at least – in the end Lorenzo was only 15th. Dani Pedrosa was still 6th.
Yonny Hernandez crashed on lap 13, changed bikes and took part in the race again.

Difficult weather conditions at the Sachsenring.

6th round: The situation at the top has eased somewhat. Petrucci is now leading the group and it gives the impression that every driver is satisfied with his current position. For the moment.

7th round: There are no dry spots to be seen on the route. Jack Miller pulls past Marquez.

8th round: Hector Barbera (P6) sticks to Márquez ‘Heck (P5) and Iannone (P7) follows a little behind, who is now being pressured by Pedrosa (P8). The time has come in turn 9: Pedrosa overtakes Iannone in the fast left turn.

9th round: Cal Crutchlow is now in the top 10. He overtook Pol Espargaro in Turn 1, the bottleneck of the Sachsenring. And outside. On a wet track. Respect! Lorenzo, A. Espargaro and Viñales form the next group behind him. Suzuki didn’t seem to be coping well with the conditions either. But even better than the reigning world champion, because Viñales overtakes Lorenzo. We’re talking about the battle for 14th place.

10th round: The motorcycles visibly stir up less water, the track is now becoming increasingly drier. Márquez is now only in 6th place, ahead of Miller and Barbera.

11th round: Crutchlow overtakes Redding and Iannone in the same breath and immediately creates a buffer between himself and the two. For Petrucci, however, it looks bad. Located in first place, he loses the front and slides into the gravel. Márquez also allowed himself a gravel bath, but remained seated and thanks to motocross mode (not on the bike, but in his head) quickly got back on the track and continued his race in 9th place. Petrucci is also back on track, second to last before Hernandez.

12th round: Barbera overtakes Miller and is thus in 3rd place. Rossi is 2nd, Dovizioso 1st. The track is mostly still wet, but clearly dry tracks are starting to appear. At the same time, water splashes up on the bikes, for example on the home straight. Petrucci drives into the pits, flames teasing from the front spoiler of his Ducati. He jumps on his 2nd bike, his team is busy extinguishing the fire.

13th round: The teams in the pits get ready to switch bikes and the crucial question arises: intermediate or slicks?

14th round: Iannone is the first to go into the pits to change bikes – apart from the rather involuntary changes from Hernandez and Petrucci. Iannone switches to intermediates. He turns back to his team, swings his fist and shakes his head. He would probably have preferred slicks. That the intermediates will hold up until the end of the race (16 laps left) is not the question. Even dry spots can be mastered with the very soft but profiled tire. It is more the wet spots on the track that could become a problem. Iannone will probably have actually wanted slicks. For the most part, the line is dry and drivers have little experience with Michelin Intermediate. Iannone is back in 18th place.

15th round: Barbera pulls out of the slipstream on the home straight past Rossi and relegates # 46 to position 3 in Turn 1. Loris Baz also picked up his intermediate bike in the pits. Now it is only a matter of time before the other drivers go into the pits, because the risk of overheated rain tires is now high.

16th round: Crutchlow – meanwhile in 5th place – is the fastest man on the track. Loris Baz goes into the pits and indignantly gives his bike to the team – they gave him an intermediate at the front and a slick at the back.

18: round: Márquez changes the bike, fitted with slicks at the front and rear. P. Espargaro and Smith also switch – intermediates front and back. Meanwhile, Rossi overtook Barbera and Crutchlow passed Miller.

19th round: In turn 2, P. Espargaro falls out of the curve. Dovizioso is on P1, Rossi is on P2, Barbera is on P3, Crutchlow is on P4, Miller is on P5, Pedrosa is on P6, Bautista is on P7. Rossi’s team indicates that he should come in to change bikes.

21st round: Iannone drives the fastest lap – with intermediates. The teams try to move their drivers into the pits, but none of the five-man lead drives in. Márquez plows through the field with his slicks – currently in 9th place. He is 6 seconds faster than the drivers on rain tires.

23rd round: The group of five drives the teams in the pits to despair – all 5 stay outside on their rain tires. Crutchlow overtakes Barbera and is now in 3rd place. And no matter how they do it now – Márquez either overtakes them on the track or while they are in the pits when they change bikes.

24th round: All but Miller go into the pits. Dovizioso: Intermediate at the front, Slick at the back. Rossi: Intermediate. Crutchlow: slicks. Miller leads the race, Marquez 6.5 seconds behind and Redding a little behind. Then follow Dovizioso, Crutchlow, Barbera and Rossi.

25th round: Márquez takes P1 ahead of Miller.

27th round: Iannone, Miller and Pedrosa overtake Rossi, who is now in 8th place.

29th round: Crutchlow overtakes Dovizioso on the inside at Turn 13 and begins the hunt for Redding.

Last round: In turn 1 Crutchlow Redding relegated to 3rd place and in turn 12 Dovizioso also overtook Redding.
