As announced by the Yamaha Sepang Racing Team, Franco Morbidelli sustained a knee injury during training that put him out of action for the MotoGP race in Assen.

Early summer break

The team did not initially provide any more precise information about the type of injury or how the Italian suffered it. A similar injury had already affected the vice world champion of 2020 in LeMans and the Italian is said to have pinched the knee again and again recently. It is now clear that the Italian will have an operation on his left knee on Friday, June 25, 2021, where he has problems with the meniscus and anterior cruciate ligament.

Yamaha has named WSBK driver Garrett Gerloff as a substitute driver. The Texan already represented Valentino Rossi during the tests in Valencia. Also in discussion was Yamaha WSBK works driver Toprak Razgatlioglu. But the Turk canceled in order to concentrate fully on the Superbike World Championship.

Morbidelli will go straight into the summer break and should be able to recover sufficiently. At the Sachsenring, Morbidelli only drove through the finish line in 18th place, penultimate. Behind him was only fellow brand Maverick Vinales.
