MotoGP until 2026 at the Sachsenring: 2021 but without spectators

MotoGP will stay at the Sachsenring until 2026
Race 2021 will take place – but without spectators

The MotoGP will take place at the Sachsenring in 2021. On all sides, the motor show will take place in front of empty grandstands, because spectators are not allowed. Despite this current restriction, the contract with Dorna has now been extended until 2026.

The good news first: After the German Grand Prix fell victim to the corona-related restrictions last season, the event will take place at the Sachsenring this year. This was announced by Sachsenring Event GmbH, a joint venture between ADAC Sachsen and ADAC. The originally planned date (June 18-20) also remains unchanged. In the same breath, operators and organizers are happy about the contract extension with MotoGP organizer Dorna until 2026. So there will be a world championship run at the Sachsenring for at least five more years. The bad news: it is very likely that the GP will have to take place without spectators. When it was last held in 2019, according to official information, 201,162 fans (cumulative number over three days of the event) filled the grandstands. This made the motorcycle GP the most popular sporting event in Germany.

Cancellation not possible

The ADAC does not provide any information about the financing of this year’s event. The deficit that can be expected without the income from ticket sales is to be seen as an investment in securing the future of the race. Another cancellation of the Sachsenring GP would considerably weaken the ADAC’s negotiating position with the Spanish GP marketer Dorna for future events. The Spaniards attach great importance to a stable calendar of the World Cup series. While many other GPs are directly or indirectly subsidized by the state – for example through grants from the tourism ministries – in this country there is very little public money for motorsport events

Conclusion

For a long time the MotoGP fans in Germany could hope, now it seems to be clear. The Sachsenring GP will take place until 2026, but in 2021 there will be no direct audience participation.
